~~I think we are extremely most fortunate to have the NHS..when you look at other countries..America being at the forefront..purely because people get into debt..lose homes if they get unwell..(I would be interested to know how much a triple by pass would cost over there..I could only imagine at least 50K)..Here its free..yes overcrowed..noisy..busy at times..MRSA...a big issue..(which is being addressed)..mixed sexed wards..understaffed..But most that venture into that field..do care..and love their job..

I will add that the NHS have done wonders for me too when admitted in an emergency..... and the same Plastic Surgeon works privately too!

My husband had major surgery earlier this year and a second less serious op last month.

Both times NHS, but the wait was several months for his first urgent one:(

I stayed by his side until he went to theatre and was there as soon as he was back on the ward..............he was drowsy after the anaesthetic and full of morphine, but I sat with him, just to reassure myself he was alright. It wasn't official visiting time, but they were really kind.

The food was revolting....................after eating his first meal he was asked if it stayed down alright, he said it was so heavy it was against the laws of gravity for it to come back up! lol

We were with him from 3 to 8 every day until he was well enough to come home again.

When he was in ICU a few years ago after breaking 3 ribs, it was open visiting and I was with him all day.

My OH went private for a hernia op,but after the initial consultation ended up with everyone else in an ordinary ward as he had to be in a hospital with ICU.
The only advantage was that he only waited a month instead of 9 months.
The NHS charged us over £600 for one night in an ordinary bed in a 6 bedded ward. The consultant and anaesthetist charged separately.
