I used to put them in the dishwasher when I lived in my old house.
I use fairy but don't think it's as good as it was.

Honestly they're not bad, was just wanting to make them look a bit better, but can live with them the way they are.

I work in a kitchen and we found the best thing for oven shelves was very, very hot water and fairy liquid. We found this out one day when we didn't have any oven cleaner...lol...

I dishwash mine, remove them from the washer will they are still hot, then attack any baked on bits with wire wool.

Used to use that when my kids were in nappies many years ago. Didn't know you could still buy it. lol

Here in Australia we have something called NAPISAN it's for soaking babies nappies to get them white. You will have something similar in other countries
It brings oven shelves up beautiful. I soak them overnight if possible or for a few hours. Use Hot water enough to cover them all with with a Cupful of NAPISAN. If you can't get them in the sink then a large Garbage bag is ideal. I do mine in my Laundry trough.

Well, it didn't work, so gonna use Frances' tip about wet and dry sandpaper.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

My friend lent me her G101 car engine cleaner to do my oven yesterday. She uses it all the time. My oven has come up like new. It comes in a 5 litre bottle which you dilute 50/50 and put it in a spray bottle. I'm definitely going to invest in some.

Oven pride is the answer for your shelves in the oven it comes in a box with a big bag, it's fantastic stuff but expensive. buy it from tesco's, sainsbury's ect.

My oven is two years new, so doesn't need cleaning yet. lol But years ago I used to put shelves in a black bag with ammonia, fantastic, don't think you can buy it now.

Biological detergent is best I think, ammonia will stink the place out lol I used to do my student house ones in the bath while I was working elsewhere in the house.

I think it is ammonia you put in the plastic bag & leave over night. Always do mine in detergent in bath as well.

If you have bleach in the bag, the slugs and snails will all be dead Vicky lol

That Fairy stuff that Ainsley advertises for baked on stuff on pans etc might work ok on oven shelves, it works well on baking trays etc. You could spray that on while the shelves are in a bin bag, and then seal it and leave outside overnight but hope no one comes and nicks them, Vicky lol

"Crikey hope not, cos I'll just leave them outside forever. Get enough slugs outside withou bringing them indoors. Does that mean they'll be in the bag?????"

I would guess so.

Oh yes Janice, thanks, should have known that!!
Hubby worked for British Steel and I have a small magnet attached my computer desk, which says in big print
'STICK TO STEEL....Recyclable Steel' !!!
duuooh !!

fridge is in a wooden cabinet so no magnets there !

Janice

Janice Report 26 Oct 2008 22:45

Sandie, you can use a fridge magnet to tell stainless steel from aluminium. The magnet won't stick to aluminium.
