Teach him to make up his mind lol, and anyway, if you had got one sort, he might have wanted different, so take him out another day and let him choose or send him out to get them.

I think his day sounded lovely, many people would envy him.

Bless him ...

AH! Fish tanks, the tropical sort, I presume?

After the Tank, the stand, the hood, the lights, the gravel, the filters, the pumps, the ornaments, the plants, ..some where to place it all...........fill it with water....oh! is our tap water good enough?..what about fish......buy six get one free.?

what goes with what? will a eat y? buy a plecostumus and not realise it can outgrow the tank in two -three years....buy bigger tank.hood, more lights, gravel etc..LOL
what do we feed em on? AH! water too alkaline........buy remedy, oops wait a minute! forgot the test equipment, water is now too acid...........Hmmm! what do we do now? ask the expert, who will offer his esteemed opinion....

over to you Tealy, and the best of luck!!

Yeah i know they can be expensive Brian, my ex hubby was into astronomy and apparently some binoculars are better and more powerful than a telescope.

We went to a Hawk Conservation establishment last week and they had binoculars on sale.

My eyes nearly watered: top of the range prices were £1,000+ !

I had no idea you could pay so much.

Tay Report 29 Oct 2008 13:53

As long as he doesn't expect me to clean them out, i've enough on with the kids and the dog lol

Sandie

Thats just the thing, i hate fish tanks, now binoculars yes i could have found them useful but a fishtank......NOOOOOOO.

Just one more hassle to clean and look after lol.

Thankyou very much for all your replies but now had a total change of plan.

After he's been hinting for binoculars for about 6 months he's now decided he would rather have the money from everyone and save up for.. get this.....A FISH TANK...can you believe it, just glad i didnt go out and buy them.

And men call us women for not making up our minds lol.

Personally, I would take him out after having a look on my own first, maybe to Jessops as suggested if you find them helpful, and let him choose his own, then he will be able to weigh up the different ones and decide for himself. No one to blame then if they aren't quite what he had in mind!
Maybe wrap up a leaflet about some or information about them from the net, with a little invitation to come shopping with you lol

Well this thread could not have come at a more opportune time. I too am thinking of purchasing a pair of binoculars for a Christmas pressie and did wonder what to look out for.

Thanks Tealy and Bob.

things to consider,
the weight, for one, in one way it helps if they are heavy ish, the wind wont blow them around..but not too heavy to be uncomfortable.

the size that IS important is the object lens...usually 50 mm 80mm would be better( lets more light in for a better image)
magnification, can be a problem, but usually around 10 times is sufficient, too much and it can be difficult holding onto a target..the image will bounce around so much as to be unwatchable.
unless you mount them on a tripod, but then you may as well get a telescope!! but alas in our climate I dont think our skies are worth investing a load of cash!!
coated lenses are a must!!
price is obviously another factor, but dont go too cheap!!
