I made sure I brought the toasting fork back from my mother's after she died, long brass one with a stag at the end, used many times when I was a child to toast crumpets and bread.

Cars with the sun roof open and at least one child's head sticking out.

Children with black teeth.

Plimmies with the toes cut off.

Bubbly tarmac! Spent hours as a kid digging it out with a stick when it was a hot day or it had just been laid..........easily amused!! Had to be in between the cobbles..!!

I never see kiddies these days with their mittens / gloves dangeling from elastic at the ends of their coat sleeves............I guess that gloves are so cheap now that if one is lost a new pair are bought.

Hi Merlin
I'm now in Australia and they don't have them here. Have what they call a Metters Stove which is like a Combustion Stove with an Oven but you use wood on it. Not quite the same as the old coal fire one though where you did your toast. The ovens were great too made great Yorkshire puddings in those ones lol.
Great Memories though

Oh yes you do Jackie,We,ve got a couple,I opened up the Fireplaces and we have lovely Coal fires ( as well as central Heating ) and as you say,The Toast is B Marvelous.I,m looking to get one of those old Ranges with the oven at the side so you can cook bacon and tomatoes in there while waiting for the toast to go brown.Lovely Grub.**M**.

Toasting forks you don't see these days.
Long handled forks that you stuck a slice of bread on and toasted it by the Coal Fire.
Tasted so much nicer than you get from Electric Toasters

Black Lead fireplaces you dont see nowadays. Ritual of cleaning them once a week what a job that was.

Gas Mantles are somehting you don;t see. We only had gas lights when I was really young no electricity.

Could probably think of heaps more but the mind doesn't work too well at this time of night lol

Regards
Jackie

Cheap way of going to the flicks Fairy? ;O)

Tina I loved the conductors too, it seemed so much more civilised then didn't it?......excepting when they rang the bell when you hadn't sat down!... bump!

Being a bus traveller myself miss the bus conductors and the old ticket machines.

I miss the little sweet shops where you could buy a few sweeties that were put in paper bags. Not like now, you have to buy a huge bagful - which encourages you to eat more! lol

Fireside tartan?never heard that expression before.......here in the North East folk who got mottled legs due to sitting too near the fire had 'corned beef legs' lol

Things we don't see nowadays? just come to my mind that it used to be a common ocurrence years ago ( mostly 1950s to 60s) when coming home from work on the bus, to sit next to workers ie from shipyards, fish quay lads and lasses, those who had really dirty, but honest jobs.
Not many had their own transport then, and sorry to say, not many of those jobs around now,but buses were jam packed and there was,as I remember, a very jovial atmosphere.
Another thing I recall-- young expected to give up their seats for adults and no bad behaviour from them either (they wouldn't dare with the tough workmen who travelled on our buses and who more than likely knew their Da's ;O)

Ahh another trip down memory lane lol

I dont know why but I had to do it and google. Apparently it could be because dogs ate more bones plus a lot of cereal was added to dog food years ago too which changed the colour of their poops! Plus dog owners now have to clear up after their little darlinks lol.
