Evening film fans,

Oh Nicky I'm with you on that awful film The Birds. I have a really bad phobia of them,especially wild birds. I can tolerate pigeons, but not black birds, sparrows, starlings or anything like that. I'm ok with ducks and chickens though...I'm very strange as my hubby says!! I'd say just unique.

Thanks for your nice words about my dad by the way. Another thing I was lucky enough to see was Churchill's coffin being taken down the Thames, dad and myself got a prime spot to watch it. I was put on a great large tea box I think it was, and remember seeing these huge cranes being lowered and hearing guns going off the other side of Tower Bridge. I was so cold even though I was well wrapped up, god it was a cold day. I think the thing that stood in my mind the most was seeing adults crying. I was nine at the time, so really didn't understand how privileged we were to be there.

Not seen Children of a Lesser God or The Silver Skates, they both sound real tear jerkers though. I quite fancied (here we go!) Richard Gere in an Officer and a Gentleman and also American Gigilo, but went off him after that. I'm sure he'd be gutted if he knew! He was very easy on the eye as you say Nicky.

Everytime Milla comes on and does the L'Oreal advert Ed I think of you. ☺

I keep on missing Milla on the L'Oreal adverts - watching BBC too much I think!

I've just finished watching the program on BBC2 about Altzheimers with Terry Pratchett - it was a very sad and moving program that made me feel very lucky - I've had the good fortune never to have a loved one suffer this awful condition.

I've just turned on to The Buddy Holly Story on BBC4. I loved Buddy Holly's music and that of the era - it was always played in my house when I was growing up and it brings back fond memories.

EDIT: I've just realised the lead is Gary Busey who played the very psychotic Mr Joshua in the original "Lethal Weapon"
I've never seen the film, but I saw the stage play about 15-16 years ago in the West End and the final scene of his guitar on the stage still brings a lump to my throat.

Didn't watch that programme with Terry Pratchett, heart breaking isn't it. No there's no one in our family who has had it either, thankfully.

I work as 'bank staff' Ed in care and nursing homes, just before last Christmas I did a few shifts in a dementia unit. I couldn't go back there again, I literally found it just to sad. It took me a good couple of weeks to forget about the poor people that were there. It kept playing on my mind. I was asked to go back the other week, but just said I found it all to sad. Some of the ladies and gents that were there weren't that old either.

Talk about count your blessings.

Any more good films? I'm giving the thread a nudge every day from now on!

My fave Buddy Holly track has to be "Rave On"

I always thought the end of the Buddy Holly Story {film} was very moving when it shows them at the airport ,and i think its Big Bopper who dosn`t get on the plane for some reason or another....... its one of those moments when you realise how taking a different path in life can change everything forever, havn`t seen Buddy Holly in the west end, but beleive its very good.....is it still showing?

Saw We will rock You at xmas a few years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it, I grew up with all the Queen songs, remember having every word of Bohemian Rapsody written in my school jotter that year it was no. 1..... was it 1975?

Also saw Blood Brothers about 18 months ago, the end is really sad.

Sorry Ed, don`t recognise your Silver Skates film at all.....

Don`t think anyones mentioned the Rocky films.... I`m not a big fan, but eldest daughter loves them.......I could never understand a word he was saying!!!

Don`t really have a favourite Buddy Holly song.......but love American Pie by Don Mclean which is associated with the death of Buddy.

Yes it was 1975 Nicky, we got married that year. Paul Rodgers from Free and then Bad Company is the front man now as you probably know. I think he still has an amazing voice, very bluesy.

Well I think it was xmas no. 1 Pam, so probably spanned both years...... Yes Queen are still very entertaining today, I always like it when they show their performance from Live Aid in 1985........ they absolutely stole the show that day..... and still love the I want to Break Free video, where they are all dressed up in high heels and mini skirts doing the housework....that Freddie mercury such a showman, probably why i love Robbie Williams as well, I saw him at Milton Keynes on his last tour, he held that audience in the palm of his hand, love him or hate him you have to admire his talent.......I have tickets for Take That at Wembley in July this year as well, really looking forward to it. Thats the thing with having daughters, you get in to all the music.... think we went through Take That, Bewitched, Spice girls, Boyzone, Blue, Atomic Kitten, Avril Lavigne, Hanson to mention a few......... remember getting the girls a Spice Girls border for their bedroom wall, and then about 6 months later Geri left the band, and their popularity began to wane......still picture myself scraping off that Bl***y border about a year later, when they`d moved on to the next band.

Oh yes that pretty boy band Hanson, from the U.S. my son looked a lot like the lead singer and had quite a few snogs when they were popular I think!

I think Bohemian Rhapsody was released just before Christmas in 75 - going to show my age now - I was in the second year of secondary school when it came out. It was at number one over the Christmas/New Year period. Still got my original copy of "A Night at the Opera" in the loft, it's probably warped beyond all recognition now and if I could find a gramaphone it wouldn't play (heh heh). I've seen Queen in concert seven times - Freddie Mercury was the ultimate showman - and have all their albums up to "It's a Kind of Magic" (soundtrack to Highlander). They also did the soundtrack to the 1980 version of Flash Gordon. Max von Sydow played Emperor Ming in that one, Brian Blessed was Prince Voltan, Timothy Dalton was Prince Barin and I think Topol was Hans Zharkov. Can't remember who played Flash Gordon or Dale Arden though. (In case you're wondering how I know all the character names, I remember watching the 30s series with Buster Crabbe during the summer holidays of my childhood ... repeatedly).

The OH loves the Rocky Films Nicky - I think we've got all 93 of them! (OK I exaggerated a bit). Didn't the original win the "Best Film" Oscar in in 77? (mind you, there was nothing else of note came out that year). I love the bit at the start of Rocky 5 where the doctor says he is brain damaged - well no s*** Sherlock!!

I liked Universal Soldier too - Dolph Lundgren does do a real mean baddie (and has an unusual taste in necklaces too). Wasn't he also the Russian boxer in Rocky 4?

Sadly, I know all the words to American Pie and have been known to sing it loudly (and off-key) at parties. One of my sisters had it on 7" and I remember the record was soooooo long that it didn't have a B side track - the first half was on one side and the second half on the other!

Oh and I don't know about the girls liking Take That, but the OH is a big fan ... Robbie too, and Will Young. I daren't tell her you've got tickets to see TT Nicky - she'll have an attack of the vapours!

She took my eldest to see Steps at Wembley just before they split - fortunately I manage to escape the concerts, the girls don't appreciate my taste in music and vice versa. I don't think I could get them to see some of my favourite bands either, although I am slowly weaning them onto Van Morrison ...

Hello folks, I've got that song that came out in 1979 by The Vapours called Turning Japanese in my head now Ed! I remember buying that in Norwich. They were a one hit wonder, but I liked that song. Made me think of it Ed when you said about your OH getting the vapours.

Yes that Queen song, it was all you heard in the summer of 1975. It was a warm summer, but not as hot as 1976!!

I remember about February or March of 1975 this wonerful song hit the radio called Mandy, we were all talking about it at work and said oh he sounds lovely this Barry Manilow, Christ were we in for a shock!!!!! (Hangs head in shame...looks aren't everthing)

Another good band of the late seventies, Squeeze, I loved them.

Saw Don Mclean on telly the other year think it was singing American Pie live, it was done some years back Ed. He didn't make one mistake. I'm not a huge fan, but it was brilliant.


I especially liked him in CRACKERJACK too with Peter Glaze. ha ha... Oh dear it's going to be one of those days I fear and I'm working later too. Speak later if I've not got myself into trouble. ☺

Yes I liked Squeeze too - there is a certain quality about Glenn Tilbrook's voice that gets you going. I also liked Elvis Costello and the Attractions - the album "Armed Forces" ranks as one of the greats of the 70s. One of my favourite of all time is "Oliver's Army".

Anyway, back to the films - about to snuggle down to "Sleepy Hollow", another one of Tim Burton's dark movies starring Johnny Depp. This time based on the short story by Washinton Irving. I think I've mentioned it before, it's the one about the headless horseman (played by Christopher Walken) terrorising a village in America at the turn on the 19th Century. Lots of other stars in it too: Christina Ricci, Michael Gambon, Miranda Richardson and I think Christopher Lee has a small part in it too.

Not really a horror film, more of a Burton DARK comedy - love it!

I've just "Wikied" Bohemian Rhapsody and it was released on 31 October 1975 -'twas at number 1 for nine weeks.

Evening Ed, just logged on about ten minutes ago. Got through my shift without upsetting anyone!

Isn't it funny, me mentioning Squeeze and on the way to work this afternoon, I heard Cool for Cats. Yes, Glenn Tilbrooks voice is good, and their songs are more like stories. My favourites are Tempted, (with Paul Carrack on vocals) Up the Junction and Is that Love. Yes Elvis Costello too and of course Blondie.

Anyway back to films. Yes Tim Burton is a very good Director and it's all a bit gothic that film isn't it. Isn't he married to Helena Bonham Carter.

Ah I knew it was about the time we got married, 11th October 1975...we were both twenty.

I don't know whether they're married Pam, but they are certainly an item. Just looked her up - apparently she was born in Golder's Green NW London!!
