Oh I see not. Posh Pixie, Janey may have offended you and I can see that the thread this morning upset many people. But this my thread, a new thread and if you are going to sling insults I am going to delete it, which will solve nothing will it?

The thing is every and each UK and US (or any other countries for that matter) serviceman or woman in theatre doesn't give a flying what not about what you think.. They are far too busy staying alive

poshpixie, if everyone kept their opinions to themselves half the threads that have been posted on these boards would never have been posted (on).

Janey did mention Iraq as one of the many examples she's given but her original thread was commenting about a poem that she objected too. having read the poem and her posts I can see why she objected to it.

As for threatening violence because you disagree with her, not very mature.

"you say people who have very little idea of politics or international ideas become soldiers"

No, Julie Ann, and you will forgive my emphasis: I DID NOT SAY THAT.

One tihng I said was:

"Young people with no opportunities in life and little exposure to ideas about politics and international affairs often become soldiers"

If you are pretending that means that ALL people who join the military have no opportunities and little exposure to ideas, you're failing to convince.

The rest of your post is mainly incoherent, but let me sort you out on one thing.

I am an atheist. I abhor much of what is done in the name of religion and despise the adherents of religions who do it.

I recognize the good that has been done by some, many, clergy in the world just as I recognize the good that has been done by some, many, soldiers.

Well, this has been one of the most interesting threads I've read in a long time on these boards! Please let it stay for a while longer.

I do think though that attacking Janey for her opinion is not the correct way for the thread to go. By all means disagree with her, that's healthy debating and we need more of it here, but please do not make it personal.

Just because someone has an opinion that differs from your opinion does not make that person wrong and does not invalidate their opinion.

Please consider this. What I personally think about anyone is my business and not their business. That is true for all of us. It therefore follows that what I think about something - war, religion, politics, fashion, TV, literary criticism (the list is endless) is my business. I am perfectly happy for people to disagree with me. Perfectly happy for people to have a different view on something. But, I am not happy if they insult me because of my view or opinion.

Therefore, please do not let this thread degenerate into some personal slanging match. That's not what Janey intended in her original thread and not what the poster of this thread intended either.

This is of course just my opinion - and as stated above I do not care what any of you think of it - just don't all shout at once!

Jill

well janey

next time your going on a train or in a huge shoppin centre and a suspicious package is left lying ready in a bin to explode and blow your legs and arms off, if that is you survive the attack
maybe you remember what these men and women are trying to stop

next time you see some drug fuelled idiot out of his head on crack
youll think hmm them soldiers are trying to stop the supply of that stuff flooding this country,
cos thats where its comeing from,
but then if you know international stuff youll know that wont
you

how dare you say you hold contempt for those men doing a job like that
many of whoich actually may save your life in a hospital in britain one day
cos some of them do that too for their job, and also go to afghanistan to help over their

Thank you Jill for those wise words. I really am going to leave it now and hope it is still here when I return. Thanks to everyone for their input so far, it is good to have a debate thread even if we don't all agree which is what debating is all about.

Well, you see, one person who has joined the discussion has hated me for over two years now. Just on general principle I think, although calling it principle might be a little high-falutin. Another hates me particularly because of my views about the deification of the military as expressed in the past.

What Staffordshire Col imagines the opinions of any member of the US or UK or another country's military, about me or my opinions, matters to me, I wouldn't know. How he knows it would also be a mystery to me.

It just keeps striking me as funny, though. They're out there fighting for my freedom of speech .......... aren't they??

you only said you have contempt for all of them

maybe ill get some help in understanding the difference in the way i interpret what you said
and how you meant it then
cos even though you explain
it still looks same to me

soldiers being uneducated!!!!

Little Buglar, shall I tell you again?

I was fighting against the despot Saddam Hussein two decades before any of your military did. As a, gasp, lawyer, one of those useless dishonourable blots on society. Representing refugees from his persecution. Devoting my time and work, at no or very little charge, to saving people from being sent back to be dealt with as he wished.

You know, back when the US was arming him.

maybe what its trying to tell you here janey
is that with out soldiers puting their lives down in wars against dictators, you wouldnt hav eyour freedom to sit and type
to sit and protest
to sit and say what ever you want

your life would be monitered and dictated
you may be living under german dictatorship had men not put down their lives for you

you may not be able to go traveling at will without soldiers willing to protect your land , protect your freedom
just a hunch but maybe that what the poem saying

There are soldiers who have raped and murdered in war. Take the war in Bosnia for example. Janey never actually said it was UK soldiers.
