Marian Susan Maughan b 1 Jul 1938 Durham NW, the daughter of David Maughan & Margaret nee Wharton; mar 1. Mar Q 1965 to Nicholas Teller Hampstead district; 2. Yes that's what I put Hawthorn......glad you got correct info from club secretary. :O)

I have just been contacted by a member who in turn has been in touch with the Secretary of Castleside Social club near Consett. This club was managed by Susan Maughan's parents in the 1940's-1950's.

The secretary put a request for information about Susan Maughan on the notice board.

One of the club's members was in the same school year as Susan Maughan and said she was born in 1938. So . . . all the internet references about her birthdate as 1942 are wrong !

"Shirley i'm getting the hang of it" & "Mau at the Coast" - you were both correct.

Susan Maughan's birth is registered simply as Marian Maughan, she possibly used Susan as a stage name.

According to Ancestry every name has been transcribed from all GRO indexes - see below, copied & pasted from their web-site.

" . . . . we’ve taken the bold step of commissioning an "every name" transcript of all GRO indexes from 1916 – 2005. The transcribed Birth index took 400,000 man-hours (that’s 187 years!) to transcribe and has added almost 62.8 million extra records to the 71 million already made available through the partnership with FreeBMD. And this is the only place online where they’re available all in one place and fully searchable by name. "

If every name has been transcribed - Marion Susan Maughan born 1 July 1942, Consett, County Durham as per Wilkipedia and as every other internet reference states - should be there.

I have ordered a GRO copy certificate, I don't know why I have gone to this length but I have ! ! ! !

Shirley - The Maughan born in 1938 Durham NW is not only the wrong year but the christian name is spelt Marian rather than Marion !

Hawthorn

Hawthorn Report 4 Jul 2010 15:49

Shirley . . . . . . I wonder, it could well be. It's not unknown for someone to say they were younger than they actually were!

Another celebrity I couldn't find the birth of was the "Carry On" star, Charles Hawtrey. Wilkipedia says he was born George Frederick Joffre Hartree 30 November 1914 . . . . . I couldn't find it !

The problem with the internet is it only takes one person to get a fact wrong and everybody afterwards copies it without ever bothering to check it out.

Susan Maughan (born Marion Susan Maughan, 1 July 1942, Consett, County Durham, England) is a British singer who released a series of reasonably successful singles in the 1960s.
Her most famous, and successful, song is “Bobby’s Girl”, which reached number three in the UK Singles Chart at Christmas time in 1962. The recording was a cover of Marcie Blane’s U.S. original. Maughan also sang the title song of the second Charles Vine low budget superspy film Where the Bullets Fly (1966).

Perennially popular, Maughan now performs frequent summer seasons at Blackpool. Still recording to this day, her 2007 album, Hey Look Me Over, has received some decent reviews

I know FreeBMD is not complete but is there any way of finding out if Ancestry is complete from 1916 - 2005?

If Ancestry IS complete between these years why isn't this birth (& possibly others) not there?

Free BMD has some births in 1947.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Jul 2010 23:12

update ..... only about 20% of births have been transcribed for 1942 on freebmd

so very little hope of finding it on there I would think

sylvia

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Jul 2010 23:08

might be different

they have been transcribed differently

.... ancestry did the 1916 - 2005 bmds themselves,

and volunteers on freebmd are still working on the records upto 1983.

I hadn't thought freebmd were past about 1940 so id din't check on there
