.....and then, out of boredom I suppose, we used to play the "let's see how many of us can fit into the phone box" thing :-( how sad.
Makes me wonder why on earth I spent so much of my early teenage years hanging around the local phone box, it must have been like some sort of giant magnet in the village. Mind you, we didn't vandalise it. We just wished someone would phone us!

As Sue said, we don't seem to see any phone boxes here in Australia, any more, although there are public phones in shopping complexes - places which have security - because that's the reason why the phone boxes have been removed - they were unusable because they were vandalised. In an emergency, it became much easier to find a passer-by with a mobile phone that it was to find a public phone which worked!
A sign of the times.

Not surprised Telefonica made all that money Malcolm.
When I lived in Spain in 1990s we waited over a year to get telephone installed so had to use telephone box to ring home.Constantly topping up with 100 peseta coins.
OH went mad when I was calling my mother....cost a fortune...never used one since then!

Whilst you lot were busy tapping out numbers on the handset there were others (allegedly, I don't know who) picking up the handset and dialling 0 for the operator...

"Operator, which number do you require".
"Oh hello, is that the Operator?"
"Yes"
amid hoots of laughter and childish sniggering..."Well you'd better get off the line, there's a train coming".

When I worked with Telefonica one of the managers told me that in the 1980's they had a bunch of public phones in Palma Mallorca which took over a million pesetas (about 5000 pounds) every day in summer. They had a full time man on the site to empty the cash boxes hourly.

With the advent of mobiles Telefonica have reduced the phones in each booth from two to one. You rarely see anyone using them.

Allan!!! :-D

Last time I used one was 2 years ago at Southampton Airport.
I was coming back from Faro, plane (the only plane - easyjet) was delayed due to a fault.

We arrived 4 hours late - at midnight.
No trains or buses running to Winchester, and I couldn't get a signal on my mobile!!
I phoned a friend to pick me up - cost me about £3
