I got a warning at that time aswell KenSE (approx 3rd jan) and I had not said Ancestry....I got told what I said but could'nt be bothered to argue...I have a good idea who it was that doing the reporting but cannot prove it.

There was a simular incident recently and I think thats when GR said it was ok to mention them

Well just under a year ago I had three posts removed simply because they mentioned Anc'stry.

Fortunately it was treated as one offence otherwise I could have been banned.

The email complained that I had "mentioned a company other than ours".

There were several other members who also received reprimands
at that time.

I don't understand some of the abbreviations used in text messages and I have caused much hilarity on many occasions when I have asked what something meant........ I did not know what LOL meant. Now, what idiot does not know that? :-S

We never used to be able to use .co.uk or .com in links but we could use .org

We also had to use either hotmale or hotma*l for hotmail or Y*hoo for Yahoo.

It was the way the word censor was set up, did make a pain in the backside.

There must have been a reason we did it in the first place. Maybe something to do with advertising. Genes used to have some weird rules.

i find it strange, i always type the names out in full,
an if gr remove them so be it, but they never have in my years of being here

DazedConfused

DazedConfused Report 4 Nov 2012 13:04

I am nudging this back up as there are still some people who are very wary of mentioning any business/firm/rival without the **.

PLEASE stop doing this, it is not necessary. Do not feel under any pressure to use the *

Be brave :-)

I've never used *** in names for other sites since I first started posting on GR back in 2004.

and I have never had a posting removed for that reason.

GR has been asked several times over the years since I joined as to whether we could or could not mention other sites on here.

The answer has always been YES we can ...........

......... so long as derogatory remarks are not made about that site, or derogatory comparisons made between GR and that site, or comparisons are made about subscriptions to those other sites.

Similarly, you cannot make derogatory remarks about GR, or ANY of its previous owners .............. I have had a couple of posts removed because of things I said about one or other of the former owners.

I've assumed that the people who do use *** became accustomed to using them back in the early days of the internet.......... which they may have used before joining GR.

I do remember the early days on the sister site Friends Reunited when certain words would be ***. The rpoblem was that they used a computer programme to spot the letter sequences

so you would end up with Es***, the Sus*** cricket team, the ****stan team beat England at cricket today, Middle*** Cricket Ground, etc etc etc :-D

Yes, Joy, that was exactly how you had to post links to other websites, with brackets around the dots.

You couldn't type hotmail or yahoo either. I remember the fun of titleless threads because of this ;-) :-D :-D
