Yes think you are right Julia in the main.

Massive estates which ate up the family fortune and
needed to make a good marriage to maintain the
property. Of course having a title to go with the
estate was a great incentive for some heiresses.

In a way thank goodness for them or we would not have
the beautiful houses and castles we have to this day.

Re he marriage of Robert and Cora. Was that not the way, with many 'Gentry' marriages.
The Gentry needed money to sustain their life styles and huge estates, whilst the American heiresses wanted a title.
I am thinking here of Winston Churchill and Clementine.
I 'm not saying this was so in all cases, but it was in many.

Even a sister of JFK., married into the Devonshire line, Chatsworth House, here in Derbyshire. Sadly she died and is buried at Endsor, on the estate.

But I will look forward to this, if they ever make it into a programme.

Roll on Christmas Special.

Heard that something was going to be shown about how Robert and Cora
had met. How she fell in love with him at first sight and how he fell in love
with her inheritance before her.

I think I did see somewhere that he is writing another series. He isn't going to kill the goose that lays the golden egg yet is he? :-D

However I think I also read that the fellow who plays Matthew wants to leave.

Can anyone tell me if there is going to be another series? It's just that they keep saying on the trailers that Downton "concludes" this week. Usually they say the series ends if there is going to be another series.
