Romney spent $800m+ to not be President.
I spent nothing for the same result.

Who's the better business person now? ;-) ;-) ;-)

JustJohn Report 8 Nov 2012 09:05

But Romney spent nothing on that eyesore called The Angle of The North ;-)

So reckon he is smarter. :-D

John

"What about Romney? Both he and his wife must be multi-lingual and well-travelled. Possible senior role for them on world stage?"

I HOPE you're saying that in jest?!

Rose If they were missionaries for their church in France, I guess they at least know there is a world beyond Massachusetts. Are they not at least French speaking?

Was not joking at all but have not looked into his background in any great detail - apart from him and his dad seem to have made money very easily and very quickly and he was a Mormon missionary in mainland Europe for 3 years when he was first married. :-D

Unfortunately John , it's NOT just what language you can speak that's important, it's what you SAY in that language lol.

I don't think someone who failed to get the latino, black, hispanic, and women and young people's vote who has made a number of gaffes re international events is the right person for the world stage?

Perhaps as a business ambassador for the US...like Prince Andrew is for..... but perhaps not lol!

Oh well, am not going to promote Romney. It was just that Obama sounded as if he had a job in mind for him, and I didn't see implementation of Obama's welfare strategy as being the right job for Mitt.

Mind you, Mitt and IDS (both Duncan and his brother Ian Smith) would get on a bundle. We could quickly see the welfare bill per capita approaching the levels of India and China. People in USA and UK on welfare would be emigrating to India and China because welfare benefits were more generous :-S

Q: What can't 200 Millions dollars buy for Mitt Romney?
A: Twitter followers! :-D

Q: Why doesn't Ann Romney want to be the first lady?
A: Because she would have to move into a smaller house. :-D :-)

John ..............

Only Romney was a Mormon missionary ........ his wife was not a Mormon, she converted before they married. Her parents were not allowed to attend the actual ceremony in the Temple because they were not Mormons..

She also almost got engaged to someone else while Romney was on his missionary 2 years in France

His overseas knowledge is very limited ................ if his trip to England and Israel in July is to believed. Not only did he insult the UK re the Olympics, but he demonstrated a terrible lack of knowledge of mid-East affairs.

His business acumen depends on buying a company in financial trouble, streamlining it by firing as many workers as he could, then selling the company.

His economic plan for the US involved lowering taxes for the wealthiest, and increasing them for everyone else.

His demise was the result of a combination of things

a) his condemnation of Obama's financial plan 2/3 years ago to save the car industry by giving government aid. Romney said the car companies should be allowed to go bankrupt, fire all the US workers, and move offshore.

That was not forgotten in the car industry areas of Ohio, etc

b) his lack of appeal to women, and so-called "minorities"

c) the intemperate remarks made by other Republican candidates for House and Senate seat regarding the rights of women.

Hilary Clinton announced months ago that she would be stepping down as Secretary of State ...........

...... so that is not news.

The belief over here is that she may well take another run for the Presidency in 2016.

Being re-elected does not mean that every member of Obama's Cabinet will remain the same ................. it's a whole new start for him, so expect to see quite a few new faces.

The only 4 Presidents that have made any real impact over here have been JFK, Reagan, Clinton and Obama in my view. And Hillary Clinton would never be in that bracket. I can see a Republican getting in next time (particularly if someone fairly mainstream who can get tea party on board), and agree it is possible that Ms Clinton could be offered up as a sacrificial lamb for the election.

Still nothing from Florida? 2 hours ago, news said result had still not been verified. What a c*ck up. Why can't we send our returning officer from the Western Isles to give Florida some advice on how to get their votes counted from a disparate electorate.

Kense Report 9 Nov 2012 09:30

There doesn't seem to be any doubt that Obama took Florida, the number of votes in in the problem areas will not affect the outcome.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 9 Nov 2012 20:27

Florida is always a problem ................ never more so than with the 2000 election, and now this one.

However, in this case, there is no doubt that Obama has won both the popular vote and the Electoral College votes in Florida ......... it is only a matter of getting th complete counts done.

Quite unlike 2000 when the outcome of the election depended on the Florida results.

Never forget .................. the governor of Florida is Republican, as is the official in charge of elections :-D

I've seen even Republicans admitting that voting in Florida and some other states would be better run in a Third World country!

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 10 Nov 2012 18:35

Florida just in - 4 days late.

Win for Obama by 74.000 votes, but that is all I know

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Nov 2012 20:44

Obama won both the popular vote and all the Electoral College votes in Florida .............

Results released Saturday show Obama carried the state with 50 per cent of the vote, about 74,000 votes ahead of Romney's 49.1 per cent. That ensures that Florida's 29 electoral college votes will all go to Obama.

Florida's final vote announcement was held up by a late flood of absentee ballots in Miami-Dade County, record turnout, and long lines that saw voters in many parts of the state unable to actually cast their votes until early Wednesday morning.

The win gives Obama 332 electoral college votes - comfortably over the 270 needed to clinch victory. Mitt Romney won 206.

One report here says ............

"The president carried Florida in part because heavy support from black, Hispanic and younger voters. Exit polls conducted for The Associated Press showed Obama was favoured by more than 9 of 10 black voters and 3 of 5 Hispanic voters in Florida. The president also was the choice of two-thirds of voters under age"

Thus, there is no way in which the Republicans can complain, or ask for recounts in Florida ....... and probably not in any other state.

The Electoral College votes rule, even if the one who gets those does not win the popular vote.

............ and I really don't know how that works!!!

Many thanks, Sylvia. It looks a strange system, but am happy with the result :-D
