British humour incorporates an ability to laugh at ourselves and a sense of the ridiculous which certain other cultures seem to lack.

Timeless comedy seems to be slapstick and surreal. Seldom does that offend.

I never liked Ken Dodd on TV, but went to see him in panto when children were small. We went for the children, bu I did not stop laughing for 3 hours. And Tommy Cooper and Norman Wisdom :-D :-D

I laugh most at old shows like Dad's Army, Hi-di-Hi, Only Fools, Open All Hours. I used to absolutely love It aint Half Hot but don't seem to see many re-runs of that fantastic show. All those shows had more than a modicum of truth as their base.

Mnay good comedians today - Michael McIntyre, Sarah Millican, Kevin Bridges (who so reminds me of Chic Murray) , Rich Hall, Ed Byrne. Like Brian, I hate unnecessary swearing and too much innuendo.

Now, there's the proof it's a personal thing.

I loathe Ken Dodd, Norman Wisdom and Tommy Cooper. None of them has ever made me laugh, not even when I was a kid. To me they just aren't funny. Neither was Benny Hill. I don't find slapstick funny.

Language doesn't bother me in the slightest - it's only words. Billy Connolly and Eddie Izzard both swear a lot and they are my favourite comedians.

I like humour where witty language and observation are at the basis of it. Banana skins and falling over - just not funny.

I think I'm probably the only person in the world who can't see how on earth Morecombe and Wise are funny !!!!!

lol Chris, no you haven't ( troubled me that is :-) ) I have known some very nice Virgos, my mum's cousin for one.

The only group of people who I found funny, without even trying, were my nieces in-law's from near Dublin. They were brilliant. I was still laughing at their remarks weeks after meeting them. Was that a regional thing, or are they genuinely funny.? I never found out. As a northerner I think our everyday humour can be a bit blunt and I am never sure if the tongue in cheek remarks are taken wrongly. I must admit I have seen 'jokes' on here that fail to make me smile, but then someone else may recount a situation that has just happened to them and I can't stop laughing.

I don't like any form of slapstick humour, either now or when I was a child, it bypassed me. I watched Sarah Millican the other night and had a good laugh. Dare I admit that I have watched the Royle family on Gold and it doesn't reflect my life but I think it is hilarious, not sure which part of the country they are supposed to live, ? Liverpool, in which case I think they are natural comedians.-jl

I loved Morecambe and Wise, could not stand Reeves and Mortimer,
not at all fond of slapstick, like 'clever' rather sharp humour, don't especially mind swearing but get fed up when it is used as an alternative to being funny lol. And my pet hate at the moment is comedians who think that the louder they shout the funnier they are.

I loved Dave Allen. Like Ed Byrne, Russell Howard, John Bishop, most of the comedians on Mock the Week can raise a laugh, except that really annoying one whose name escapes me, but Mrs Brown's Boys is right up my street, a bit insane lol :-D

RR - had my huff - am OK now :-) My son is like my father in that he can pull your leg whilst remaining deadpan. Is also good at very quick at one liners. Father Liverpudlian and son has lived there.
