British humour incorporates an ability to laugh at ourselves and a sense of the ridiculous which certain other cultures seem to lack.

Timeless comedy seems to be slapstick and surreal. Seldom does that offend.

I never liked Ken Dodd on TV, but went to see him in panto when children were small. We went for the children, bu I did not stop laughing for 3 hours. And Tommy Cooper and Norman Wisdom :-D :-D

I laugh most at old shows like Dad's Army, Hi-di-Hi, Only Fools, Open All Hours. I used to absolutely love It aint Half Hot but don't seem to see many re-runs of that fantastic show. All those shows had more than a modicum of truth as their base.

Mnay good comedians today - Michael McIntyre, Sarah Millican, Kevin Bridges (who so reminds me of Chic Murray) , Rich Hall, Ed Byrne. Like Brian, I hate unnecessary swearing and too much innuendo.

Now, there's the proof it's a personal thing.

I loathe Ken Dodd, Norman Wisdom and Tommy Cooper. None of them has ever made me laugh, not even when I was a kid. To me they just aren't funny. Neither was Benny Hill. I don't find slapstick funny.

Language doesn't bother me in the slightest - it's only words. Billy Connolly and Eddie Izzard both swear a lot and they are my favourite comedians.

I like humour where witty language and observation are at the basis of it. Banana skins and falling over - just not funny.

I think I'm probably the only person in the world who can't see how on earth Morecombe and Wise are funny !!!!!

RR - I am a Virgo and I do not think I have troubled you and I have a good sense of humour.

I think I shall have a 10 minute huff now!! ;-)

Gwynne Yet we can laugh together on here. If I watched Eddie Izzard with you for 10 minutes and Tommy Cooper for 10 minutes, would it really be light and shade for both of us.

Chris Rose has asked me to reply to your letter as she is in Cabinet at present :-D She thanks you most sincerely for your enlightening and thoughtful letter and she is upset that you are in a huff.

But you are a Virgo. Therefore you continually trouble her and have no sense of humour.

But she loves you just the same ;-) <3

The only group of people who I found funny, without even trying, were my nieces in-law's from near Dublin. They were brilliant. I was still laughing at their remarks weeks after meeting them. Was that a regional thing, or are they genuinely funny.? I never found out. As a northerner I think our everyday humour can be a bit blunt and I am never sure if the tongue in cheek remarks are taken wrongly. I must admit I have seen 'jokes' on here that fail to make me smile, but then someone else may recount a situation that has just happened to them and I can't stop laughing.

I don't like any form of slapstick humour, either now or when I was a child, it bypassed me. I watched Sarah Millican the other night and had a good laugh. Dare I admit that I have watched the Royle family on Gold and it doesn't reflect my life but I think it is hilarious, not sure which part of the country they are supposed to live, ? Liverpool, in which case I think they are natural comedians.-jl

Edit
one comedian, who is very regional, is Jethro and I feel sorry for all the other people in ? Cornwall who have him representing their sense of humour.None.

Agree totally with BrianW. And to support BC's earlier comment :

The Irish 911 call
An Irish woman cleaning her husbands rifle and accidentally shoots him ...she immediately dials 911.

Irish woman" its my 'kin husband! I've accidentally shot him, I've 'kin killed him!"
Operater: "Please calm down, madam. Can you first make sure he's actually dead?"

*click*....*BANG*

Irish woman: "Okay,I've done dat...Whats next?"

I loved Morecambe and Wise, could not stand Reeves and Mortimer,
not at all fond of slapstick, like 'clever' rather sharp humour, don't especially mind swearing but get fed up when it is used as an alternative to being funny lol. And my pet hate at the moment is comedians who think that the louder they shout the funnier they are.

I loved Dave Allen. Like Ed Byrne, Russell Howard, John Bishop, most of the comedians on Mock the Week can raise a laugh, except that really annoying one whose name escapes me, but Mrs Brown's Boys is right up my street, a bit insane lol :-D
