maggiewinchester Report 11 Dec 2012 22:48

I didn't realise that, Jiminy.

in the 9 times table, as the first number of the answer goes up, the last numbers go down.

1x9= 0 9
2x9= 1 8
3x9= 2 7
4x9= 3 6
5x9= 4 5
6x9= 5 4
7x9= 6 3
8x9= 7 2
9x9= 8 1
10x9=9 0

I wish I'd known that when I was young :-(

I wish I'd known it too, Maggie, and I wish I'd known that the numbers all add up to 9. Would have come in handy :-)

Budgie Rustler

Budgie Rustler Report 11 Dec 2012 22:57

Never noticed that befor Maggie :-)

But I have just noticed if you add the answer digits together, they all add up to 9.

edit; Karen beat me to it :-D

maggiewinchester Report 11 Dec 2012 23:33

I never noticed they added up to 9 either - BTW, one of my daughters told me about the 9x table - and it took me ages to grasp it!!
She had to write it down for me :-S
I didn't even have the excuse that I was in my dotage - she was 8 and I was 34!!

Edit - just noticed that the last number is the other way round to the first number 2nd to 9th, 3rd to 8th etc
1x9=09
10x9=90
2x9=18
9x9=81
- but I suppose they would be

Here`s an interesting one Rose ... going forward and meeting yourself coming back. (so as to speak)

111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321

Don't ya just love useless knowledge. (courtesy of Google)

So if none of US knew that (about 9x table) , does that mean our teachers didn't know about it either, otherwise they surely would have taught it as a sort of mental crib sheet thing, you know, like Every Good Boy Deserves Favour or whatever it was, along with all those other little reminders.
Edit: just remembered Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain was another :-)

I told my eldest ages ago about how to cheat with the 9x table..........she refuses to use it despite being c*** at her times tablesl*sighs*

maggiewinchester Report 12 Dec 2012 00:01

None of my teachers (and I went to 6 schools) knew about it - or weren't prepared to share it!!
Actually, when I was at Uni,(1990ish) no-one in the Education department knew it either!!

As for the 9 times table you can do it on your fingers with ease.
If you haven't managed your 9 times table yet !

Both hands up
Bend left thumb down to represent 1 the remaining fingers and thumb equal 9
(i.e I x 9 =9)
Both hands back up
Bend left index finger down ,as to represent x2 count the finger(thumb in this case) on the left as 10 and count the remaining fingers to the left as 8
(i,e 2 x 9 = 18)
Both hands back up
Bend middle finger down to represent x3 ..you have 2 fingers to the left that now becomes 20 and 7 to the right
(i.e 3 x 9 =27)
and so it goes on :-)

same principle as Maggie says ,but quite easy for children to learn.

Just a bit of religious nonsense for you to contemplate.

Earth is the only planet NOT named after a God.

Does that mean Earth is a god forsaken place. :-S

there was a spy film that one of the operators used in his code.........

the crib was "the number that always comes back to itself"

9 was the key to finding the secret words hidden in ordinary messages
