Personally I'm not Superstitious, (touch-wood) but some of my old family sayings seem to be tea related;

Two spoons in a saucer a wedding coming.

A dropped teaspoon a baby coming,

"One to make one to pour out, one to have a baby before the year is out"

Any more interesting pearls of wisdom out there?

Never put new shoes on the table ...and never ever give a knife as a present. :-0

Well thats what my grandma used to say.

Picking up a glove that someone else has dropped but they mustn't say thank you is what I was told to be lucky.

Someone told me off the other day for picking up their glove - they needed to practise bending over after an op :-0

Dropping a knife, strange man in the house

Spilled salt, Financial Hardship

I automatically throw a pinch of salt over both shoulders if anyone spills salt (cant remember what shoulder it's supposed to be) it has never done me one iota of good :-(

I don't walk under ladders..........

because I don't want a ladder or a pot of paint falling on my head

I think the salt over the left shoulder is to ward off the devil ;-)

Mum used to say...... "See a pin and pick it up, all that day you'll have good luck". Mum should have picked up more pins, because she got one stuck in her foot, had to have it cut out!

you can give a knife as a gift as long as the following ritual is followed


.................. the recipient MUST give you some money, even the smallest coin will do.

Then he/she has bought the knife from you

opening an umbrella in the house is bad luck .................... so how can you dry a wet one????

it is bad luck for a black cat to cross your path

Do not put shoes or gloves on a table

The fireplace should be cleaned out on New Year's Eve, and the ash taken outside. BUT no ash is to be taken out after midnight and through New Year's Day as that lets all your good luck escape.


Listening to the Teddy Bears Picnic was unlucky, and the radio had to be turned off immediately. Why?? no idea!!!

Shoes or gloves on a table is considered unlucky because back in the day when someone was "laid out" at home (usually on the table!) the last things to be put on were shoes & gloves.

Haven't heard the one about ashes on NYE ~ but my Scottish rellies have so many superstitions about NYE (and everything else) I might have missed that one (or just tuned out lol).

We have the “give a coin if you receive a knife or it will sever the friendship“, thinking is you are not giving, the recipient is buying the knife (some people give a coin as part of the gift so it can be returned) also read recently that knives should not be given as wedding gifts as the marriage will fail.

On coins never give an empty purse or wallet as you curse them to poverty.
Ain't choosing presents a minefield!

If you push your chair back under the table when you leave it means you will not return.

If two people pour from the same teapot then one of them will be having ginger twins.

A traveller told me never to do my washing on New Years Day or I would wash away a member of my family. I don't let Fred wash on that day because there is only me in his family!

Showmen around Oxfordshire never say monkey because,according to legend, one of them once had a pet monkey which escaped and climbed to the top of the church spire in the particular village around which this superstition is centred and I can't rememberwhich one it is.

Anyway,that year it rained so hard the fair made no money for which they blamed the monkey.

@ Lolly. Re Salt over the shoulder

According to my MIL who was VERY Superstitious. It's supposed to be over the left shoulder aimed to go in the Devils eye, as he is always looking over your left shoulder. ;-)

I think she believed in all of the comments here, plus a few more. :-D

Don't place your shoes on the table.

My wife was buying an umbrella a few years ago, and wanted to open it up in the shop. The sales assistant had to leave the shop while she did that. :-)
