There does seem to be a lot of negativity about.

I have been suffering depression since Mum's death and my daughter has also been desperately ill so I am only just coming back to my normal cheery self.

Even in my bleakest moments I have tried to see the good in people and the positives to turn the negatives upside down.

There is a lot to be said for getting out the anger, but maybe the boards aren't always the right place to do it.

I think it is worth posting a photo of ourselves pre-Genes chat and a mirror behind the computer and comparing them each week.

One of them will be smiling back at us with relatively few lines. The other will look like the mother or the father.

One hour maximum on puter, TV, phone and kindle combined, two hours minimum break in the real world. Eight hours sleep whenever you feel tired. That was Auntie Maggie's home made remedy.

And I am smiling and happy today, after getting home at 9pm last night after 11 hours of hellish work in the freezing cold and hardly able to stand after walking about 14 miles. So I really have a reason to grump almost as much as anyone else :-D

How I agree....respect each others ideas...lets get back to normal chat...helping each other and healthy debate...
We all find an outlet on these boards not just for our family history, but people with the same interests .
When my OH was alive I used to tell him bits of news that were topical and he would say ...where have you heard that......oh just read it on Genes. It can be a lifeline for so many and lately many are getting so opinionated and not listening to others but taking umbrage that it is getting aggressive as Dizzy says.
Let's get positive...Spring is hopefully on its way...so new beginnings?

Nice to see you improving Dizzy...and Kitty nice to see you back on here and hope everything goes well for you.

AGGRESSIVE??????

Could you elaborate on that,

Often it is my opinion that a response to anything posted on hear can be interpreted as "Aggressive" when the reply is direct and to the point

Often when someone comments if it is controversial it can come across as "Aggressive"

Often the reader can misunderstand what is meant by the content of a post

I personally have often been misunderstood on this board

"The power of the written word"

Dizzie, I know what you mean and it is because a few people have an issue with one person. Why they attack the person not the subject of the thread I don't know. Best ignored. :-)

Morning Dizzi, good on you for saying it as it is. Glad to see you improving day by day. xx

Kitty, sorry you have had such a tough time. Nice to see you back on the boards - I used to love reading your posts. (I fitted in the 'won't cook' category and was a queen of ping- meals or dial-a-dinner!!) Hope your daughter is improving and that your days continue to get brighter. xx

Roy. That comes across as aggressive to me. I know you don't want it to, but it immediately would put me on the defensive.

I do think a lot of the aggression comes from a mixture of things - mainly being on the computer for far too many hours every day imho. I know pain and lack of sleep affects some, and also some of us lead fairly lonely lives. And some are not that good at expressing themselves in this media.

Not sure if AnninGlos is referring to me, but I am not the only one who is the object of aggression from time to time (Roy has his share). And I honestly don't care if someone has a go at me. Because it would be someone else if it wasn't me. Just the nasty and frustrated side of personalities that can come out on these threads without the poster feeling in any way threatened themselves.

Maybe you have more time to sit and read since you've been poorly, Gwen.

I don't see anything different, they were a lot more aggresssive a few years ago.

DIZZI, I am so glad you posted this thread as I have been thinking the same thing for a while now. I am fairly new to GR and Chat rooms in general. I was rather surprised and taken-aback at the way some people responded to topics. How quickly comments went from rational debates, well thought out and very informative observations and quickly turned spiteful, personal and aggressive. I have seen some simple comments turn into bizarre arguments, and develop in to full scale open warfare with so much RRing going on, all of which I consider made some threads unpleasant to read . Some argue that we are all entitled to out opinion and I would wholeheartedly agree with this, but I do wonder if the “argument” would be quite so aggressive in face to face situation. I read the threads and will comment where and when I feel I can contribute, but would rather not get into a cyber argument, so even though I may have strong feelings regarding certain topics, I leave them unsaid on here. Having said all of that, I have chatted to some genuinely lovely people who have helped me in a number of ways. So by and large, I form my decision on the more positive side of the boards. I hope you are OK and feeling the benefit of a little of the sunshine. As a child of the 60s is say Peace and Love to all

Also typing in all capitals looks angry and aggressive. I know you don't mean it to, Gwen, and have your reason, but that's still how it looks.

Maybe you are also seeing what isn't there - aggression where there is just disagreement.

JoyDean

JoyDean Report 21 Feb 2013 09:57

I agree with Gwynne that they were a lot more aggressive a few years ago. However, I think there has been more frequent intensity in recent times.

Hugs for Dizzi and for Kitty.

Long live Dizzi's capitals. Do you remember a couple of months ago how much we all missed them.

And they certainly never come across as aggressive to me. Love them :-D :-D :-D

Nice to see you back posting Kitty :-D

Just because there have always been spats is no reason why it has to continue.

Many of us older members have witnessed these spats & stopped posting for a while until they blow over.

New members are not met with welcoming posts, but ones wanting to know all about them & the suspicion that they are an 'old' member back to cause trouble.
