OneFootInTheGrave Report 26 Feb 2013 11:35

An inmate at one of Britain's top security prisons was compensated because his newspaper was delivered late, it emerged yesterday.

The prisoner at Frankland jail, Durham, claimed he was being 'targeted' as other convicts got their papers on time.

The prisoner who complained about his late newspaper delivery is said to have received around £100 in compensation :-|

Susan10146857 Report 26 Feb 2013 11:37

Surely they would have to prove that he was being targeted and paying him anything would show that he had been.

I take it that you have never visited any of these places then nor have some idea of the way tiny things can blow up into a full scale riot.

I have never visited any of these places and I have no plans to visit them, mark you if any of the reports I have seen in the press are true, then in some of these establishments they appear to have a better standard of living than many people who are on the outside of them ;-)

I can't even get a newspaper delivered where I live :-(

The reports in the press are wildly wrong.

You have to remember that there are not only prisoners in a prison. There are the staff who need to maintain some form of control which does involve more than a little psychology. It can't be done purely by brute force.

Yes I suppose that could have been rather a naive of me. I was just amazed, that is all and genuinely thought that perhaps justice prevails. perhaps I am wrong :-(

After watching H.M prison Aylebury for the passed two weeks. I can't believe my eyes, what these "BOYS" 18/21 will do to get attention. I recon they should be put in a boot camp for 12 months, and get some respect drilled into them. Murderers, gangsters, drug barrons, burglars , they seem to think they can run our prison service, better than us.

When a burglar says after 70 arrests "I did nothing wrong" Has he been left traumerised after a thing like him has been through their house. NO of course not. But still he thinksd he's done nothing wrong.

I would take away all their "TOYS" and TVs etc, anf let them know why they are in PRISON.

I know this will offend some of you, thats not my intention, just my view.

Merlin Report 26 Feb 2013 13:36

Well, if he did get compensation I do hope they deducted the delivery fee plus the cost of B&B there and of course a donation to the wage of the warders who have to ensure he stays there. Then the matter of compensating his victims. :-|

I'm tempted to write to my MP when these stories come up but I find banging my head against the wall is far more productive.

Seems to me the country as not just gone to the dogs but passed through and emerged the other end!

Late last night I watch "America's toughest Prison" My have we a lot to leard.

The Sheriff of this Arazona state. Has 4,000 prisoners, both men and women. NO EXTRA'S what so ever. They are put in leg irons, and handcuffs, locked up 23 hours a day. They have part of the prison accomodation, outside under CANVAS. with only the BED. Inside Prisoners have an 8' by 6' cell. With concrets bed base, matress, toilet and wash basin. THAT'S YOUR LOT.

Are you watching Mr. Cameron.

I think I value my freedom above a colour tv and any other 'luxury' everyone seems to think prisoners get. A prison is still a prison.

IF YOU COMMIT A CRIME END UP IN PRISON, YOU SHOULD FORSAKE YOUR HUMAN RIGHTS !

MAY-BE THIS WOULD DISCOURAGE CRIME ?

"IF YOU COMMIT A CRIME END UP IN PRISON, YOU SHOULD FORSAKE YOUR HUMAN RIGHTS !
MAY-BE THIS WOULD DISCOURAGE CRIME"

That is exactly what was tried in the C18 and C19. That is what is being tried in the USA. Only problem it is that it is expensive, did not and does not work.

Besides, even prisoners have relatives outside. With votes.

One of my ancestors owned a factory in the Midlands. During a C19 recession he decided to invest in a "gaming house" or what today would be called bingo. These were illegal at the time but tolerated with "bungs" to the local JPs. Something went wrong and the guy ended up with 6 months hard labour in his 50s. He died a few months later from the treatment handed out. Most of his relatives emigrated to New Zealand where today they run a successful large business. Another emigrated to the USA where they prospered too.

Only one stayed in the UK where he became a leading light in the Baptist movement. AFAIK the Baptists belong to the "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" persuasion.

I don't.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 27 Feb 2013 12:03

Addendum.

The US constitution forbids "cruel and unusual punishments".
Quite how this is squared up with locking people up for lifelong solitary confinement in a small metal cell (Colorado) or the kidnap ("renditions") and torture associated with Guantanamo I have no idea.

It is a bit much even for Teresa May.

SheilaSomerset

SheilaSomerset Report 27 Feb 2013 12:04

Being in prison IS the punishment, what shall we do, maybe thumbscrews, water torture or the rack????

Even if the prison was the last word in luxury (and I'm damned sure they're not), nothing would make me consider it as anything but a prison.
