You see those newspaper headlines somethimes that say " Evil George Smith who murdered his neighbour" or whatever.

Well,I am sorry but ,if you call your child Evil you are not setting him up for a promising future are you?

There was an important independent chapel in West Bromwich (Mares Green) and that threw up some strange Old Testament names for a few generations.

Joseph was oldest son of Jacob, Naphthali 6th and Gad 7th. And Selena is also OT.

Now if Gad was called Odd to avoid calling him Gad, that is a possibility.

There was an Odd Fellows married in Birmingham in 1924. Unless it was this one (born 1853) getting married aged 71 it seems to be a name passed down in Fellows family.

Also name Odd is very popular in North East England and seems to be Scandinavian origin. And there was a Swedenborgian church in Birmingham not that far from West Bromwich. And I know there were quite close connections between the Independents (formerly Countess of Huntingdon Connexion) in Mares Green and the Swedenborgian Church in Birmingham.

I think the one i looked at was Oddious that puzzled me JLC as it sounds an awful name but its not biblical though it may have a good meanng.

FA. Yes, noticed Oddius and Oddy were fairly common on a Free BMD search.

I just know that one of two Mares Green families left that chapel in mid 19th century and began attending the Swedenborgian chapel a couple of miles away in Birmingham.

So just possible they moved just before 1853 when Odd was born and asked the Minister for a Swedish name for youngest.

No idea at all if I could be right, but it does seem significant that most of these Christian names of Odd are in the north east and the surnames are all Scandinavian.

Fellows is a common Black Country name (Fellows Park was Walsall FC's old ground) so I think there is no connection with Odd Fellows society.
