I expect this has already been discussed, but if not

The only English Pope

Pope Adrian IV, born Nicholas Breakspear or Breakspeare, was Pope from 1154 to 1159. Adrian IV has been the only Englishman so far to occupy the papal chair. Wikipedia

Sheesh

The interpreter is dreadful. he is making a right mess of the Two prayers. How can we know what the new Pope is really saying?

Commentator on BBC said that it must be Francis after Francis of Assisi,

However, Francis Xaviour was a Jesuit, as is this Pope, so I wonder??

By the way, I believe that the name Fanny comes from Frances ... Pope Fanny The First sounds a little odd. ;-)

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 13 Mar 2013 23:37

The Vatican has said that it is Francis after Francis of Assisi because he was a "lover of the poor", as is the new Pope

BBC slammed over Pope election coverage after translator fails to translate the Hail Mary or Our Father prayers correctly

Our TV (CBC ..... Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ..... and our equivalent of the BBC), didn't bother translating either prayer

TessAkaBridgetTheFidget

TessAkaBridgetTheFidget Report 14 Mar 2013 00:32

Thanks Sylvia. I hadn't heard that the Vatican announced that the new Pope is named after Francis of Assisi, just a comment from a t.v. presenter to said 2it must be after St. Francis of Assisi" (or words to that effect).

Would find it easier to recognise a picture of Francis of Assisi (brown robe, with small animals), right away. Can't recollect how Francis Xaviour is depicted.

Re translating prayers.
I wondered about that myself. Instead of saying the prayers in English as we would recognise them, the translator seems to have translated into modern English.

I would have no problem with it either way.

ChrisofWessex,

Black smoke is made by adding cartridges containing potassium perchlorate, anthracene and sulfur to the burned ballots.

White smoke is made by adding cartridges containing potassium chlorate, lactose and chloroform resin to the burned ballots.

I have a statue of St Francis in my garden ... just thought you'd like to know that ;-)

I think Pope Francis may have 'more about him' than Benedict, will be interesting to watch.
