There was no need for her to have to lift you off the bed,,,,,you are taught how to assist on a one to one to move someone alone.,,,,,,you are told always call for further assistance when a call needs more than one assistant.

You are also taught the quality of patient care.

Seek out PALS and also your PD nurse.....if you dont make a formal and loud complaint then it leaves the way for other patients to be treated the same.

Actually, not all nurses so unhelpful - as an outpatient last week, I had to get on and off a trollies for examinations and tests. I have arthritis in my knees so it is a bit difficult to do. Different nurses both times but they both helped me.

Guinevere,
I was addressing the not helping patients out of bed to the loo etc, NOT the attitude problem the nurse seems to have.

Dizzi - PALS as other have said, is the way to go.

Potty Report 24 Mar 2013 14:22

I can understand the original refusal (know a paramedic who now has back trouble from trying to lift a patient) but surely there was another nurse who could have been also asked to help? And the later, comments - completely unacceptable. Hope that nurse is in a similar situation herself sometime and is treated in the same way.

Yes, Dizzi, complain.

Edie: actually you have already complained - your post is probably on Google by now.

Guinevere Report 24 Mar 2013 14:15

It's the fault of the nurse the way she spoke to Gwen and about Gwen.

As I said, dreadful cow.

I think Dizzi it may not be the fault of the nurse, this happens at the hospitals in Nottingham, they have to obey the rules.
Probably something to do with the "compensation culture vultures". :-(
Or maybe, Elf an Safety issue. :-)

Try asking the nurse, if she`s not allowed to help.

Good advice from OneFootinTheGrave regarding PALS.

Most hospitals have this service and would be your first step in lodging your complaint.

They should supply you with a form to complete to register your concerns.

Wish you well

Get somebody to bring in a small voice recorder as used for dictation etc. It will hold hours of voice - cheap on eBay. Get the recordings == evidence. Then complain. Watch them jump like fleas.

I think her behaviour is disgusting...What happens if you fall on the floor, do they just leave you there as they are not allowed to pick you up because of their backs :-S...
I had a similar situation along time ago when I was suicidal, I had got very drunk and went to step off the cliffs in Brighton but a policeman grabbed me just as I was stepping over...They took me to hospital and I overheard a male nurse say "drunks get treated last if at all, we just leave them to sober up, they are a waste of space"....I made a complaint and got a letter of apology, well if you could call it that...They basically made excuses....

I feel that you should complain as they are supposed to be there to help not criticize..

Dizzi, if we are talking about an NHS Hospital, does it not have a Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) - most hospital trusts have one, they will help you raise your concerns informally.

The way you were treated is totally unacceptable :-|

Hope you feel better soon <3

Mersey Report 24 Mar 2013 13:41

Me personally I would complain Dizzi, you are in hospital for a reason and you need the care and support of the trained staff, you not only need the care you deserve and are entitled to it.

Please mention this to staff or even family members or friends that may visit if you do not feel you can yourself.

Take care <3

And if your complaint is ignored Dizzi, take it further, write to your local MP.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 24 Mar 2013 13:31

Complain in writing or they'll deny getting a complaint.

Caroline

Caroline Report 24 Mar 2013 13:30

You have to complain no question. Yes they can't just go around pulling people out of bed but they must be trained to use something to lift you up...there will always be someone that needs help for some reason so it makes no sense at all.
Not only that but she was awful in her treatment of you afterwards.
There must be some sort of person to complain to that works on your behalf in the hospital. I know in the past when I had to complain about the treatment my father received in Southampton there was a person you contacted and they worked on your behalf. If they were stupid enough to do it again to you then complain again but I don't think they would.
Good luck

BarbinSGlos Report 24 Mar 2013 13:22

So sorry to here this Dizzi but it just confirms what we read in the papers about "some nurses"

My grandaughter works with vunerable patients and she has been given specific training for lifting and hands on care.

Complain if you can and good luck.

SheilaSomerset

SheilaSomerset Report 24 Mar 2013 13:20

Whilst there may be certain things that nurses are not allowed to do, EVERY patient deserves to be treated with care, compassion and dignity. Sadly, I do think there are significant problems in this area, throughout the country. Complain, Dizzi, and I hope you feel better soon <3

Wend Report 24 Mar 2013 13:18

You must complain Dizzi. What appalling behaviour - she's a disgrace to the nursing profession. :-|

My daughter had a back operation recently in a London hospital. She had been told that she would be in for 3 days. However, under 24 hours later, she was told she could go home. Still feeling groggy from the general anaesthetic and in a lot of pain, she told them she didn't feel ready to go yet. They insisted. It was 3 pm and she told them that her husband couldn't pick her up until 6 pm, so would it be alright to stay until then. They agreed and then completely ignored her for 3 hours. She heaved herself up to pour a glass of water from the jug on her bedside table and spilt some. After asking for a cloth to mop it up, a nurse reluctantly fetched one and just handed it to her. Then, when it was soon time to go, she struggled out of bed, went to the loo, got dressed and packed her things, without any assistance at all. A girl in the next bed, same age and who'd had same op, was treated in similar fashion and said she was going to complain. I hope my daughter does too.

PollyinBrum

PollyinBrum Report 24 Mar 2013 13:15

Complain DIZZI. I understand that nurses are now not expected to lift paitents out of bed, but they surely they have to be made aware of those with certain conditions who are unable to do so for themselves will need some assistance. She needs to have your full medical history brought to her attention. As for her further comments to you she shows no compassion and is totally unprofessinonal. Perhaps she should consider if she is in the right profession.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 24 Mar 2013 13:08

Shameful treatment. I hope the woman gets sacked, dreadful cow.
