I have not been on the Family Search site (Mormons) for some time. I have just had a look at it and was shocked. It has completely changed in format and no longer gives as much information as it did before. In fact it no longer looks like the old IGI. I know it was not 100% accurate but at least it gave enough information to point one in the right direction for further information.

Can anyone tell me what has happened?

RolloTheRed Report 30 Apr 2013 19:15

Actually it is a whole lot better with far more information.
Experiment with the interface and you'll soon get the hang if it.
The old IGI index is still there if you drill down for it, complete with all the unsourced "user submitted" entries and such.
You can still submit reel numbers and such to get all the people in a village and so on.

Thanks Rollo, I have tried everything to find the old IGI but no luck. How do I do it?

GinN Report 30 Apr 2013 19:18

I agree with you, StaffyKnot, the new format is quite difficult to use, and doesn't seem to give as much information. The two formats were run in tandem for a while last year before deleting the old one. I think many people were disappointed, as there was quite an outcry on the net from regular users.
Shame, isn't it! :-(

BarneyKent

BarneyKent Report 30 Apr 2013 19:20

Yes it is a crying shame. There is no way I think it is an improvement.
But why should the Mormons be any different? Every Company in the country and every Government Department mends something when it ain't broke !

I love the new format!

you get much more, as Rollo said ..........

....... and much more of it is documented information unlike the guesswork of the previous version

Tell me how............................Please

Annx Report 30 Apr 2013 20:42

I agree and don't like it much either StaffyKnot. It took me ages getting zero results for my searches, even with just a surname, until I left out putting in a country!! Then I got results!!

I loved the Hugh Wallis site best where you could click on a county and then a village and put in a surname and get all the records for all the churches there. Simples it was, but now it's gone. :-(

If you really want just the IGI

Go to:

https://familysearch.org/search

Scroll down to 'browse all published collections'

Try clicking on, say,' United Kingdom and Ireland'

Scroll down the many collections (alphabetical order) until you get to:

International Genealogical Index (IGI)

and click.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 30 Apr 2013 21:14

Just to confirm that Kucinta's post is correct
ie.
Scroll down to 'browse all published collections'
Try clicking on, say,' United Kingdom and Ireland'
Scroll down the many collections (alphabetical order) until you get to:
International Genealogical Index (IGI)
and click."

The IGI is in the new format but has all of the old problems i.e. a mixture of the good, bad and impossible. Don't rely on IGI records that cannot be confirmed from another primary source ( not OP trees ! )

good luck

Many thanks for your help. I will now see if I can do it. Busy today so will try tomorrow and will keep you posted. Once again, thank you.

Many thanks to those who pointed me in the right direction. I have mastered the new Family Search site now but I still think the original was easier.

I think I'm losing it.
A couple of days ago on FS i found my 4x Gt Gf was a Chelsea Pensioner. Found his birth and marriage too.It was getting late so left it at that.
Have gone in since on several occasion to search for the same detail so I can search in the Military but cant find anything. No records at all.

Also I have my mums B.Cert but its not on GR or FS.

Wont give up though :-)

Hi Barb,

This is why I preferred the old site, I too have entered some info and got an answer but a few days later the same info brought up no results.

Another thing that happened, I searched for Richard Bland, married to Mary by entering date & place of birth and approx marriage date. I got a nil result. A few minutes later I was searching for Ann Bland and lo and behold up popped Richard Bland married to Mary.........................................

So a direct search does not work but an indirect one does. Very puzzling.

Here's the old IGI Batch numbers.

I still use it for village names.

Barb - try freebmd on this link

http://images.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/choose.pl

Read the instructions to select event/year/quarter/letter etc.

It might be long winded, but if the name was registered by wrongly transcibed, it ought to be shown.

You could use the search boxes but with only the first name, quarter and reg district and whittle it down - check the images in case of mistransciption
If you are comfortable to do so, you could put a thread up on Find Ancestors or Genealogy Chat

Its not just me then StaffyKnot, real pain though yeh !

Thanks Marilyn :-)

Thanks Barb

Even the tip from +++DetEcTive+++ shows how complicated it is now. He says:

"You could use the search boxes but with only the first name, quarter and reg district and whittle it down"....

WHITTLE IT DOWN !!!!

And the new site is supposed to be easier?

I'm with you Barb, I don't get it.

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 4 May 2013 15:49

That was on freebmd ;-) :-D

You can move to the next page of the index on Ancestry. Does anyone know of a different site where you can do that for free? Serious question as previous sentence looks slightly sarkey

GlasgowLass Report 4 May 2013 16:14

I agree with Barb and Staffy,
Before the new FS, I used Scots Origins.
I found loads of Non User Submitted Entries, and followed up by obtaining the docs.
Even locating these definitive records on the current FS is a challenge.
