According to the 1891 census my great grandfather was born in winister Somerset . I cannot find it on any map. Any thoughts folks ? I cannot find John Hembery from Winister

That's it I don't my great grandada was born in Wales in 1889 his dad was born in Winsister in roughly 1869

not seeing Hembery in wales in 1891 can you post what you have found

Perhaps it might be a poorly written / interpreted:

Ilminster or Misterton (under Chard).
Dunster (under Exmoor)
or Pitminster?

but there is a Winster in Somerset if you google

Interesting, Ann. That was the first thing I did.
My search keeps changing it to Dunster!

I looked in my old map books of villages and it is not noted there, either.
Hence my thought of incorrect interpretation.
Perhaps it was a hamlet long absorbed!

Out of curiosity it will be interesting to learn more if Helen returns with info.

1891 census shows charles hembery born winister living in ystradfodwg with wife Elizabeth wood yeovil and son charles aged 2 and Richard aged months old . Charles aged 2 my grandad . On charles and Elizabeth marriage certificate ,Charles's dad listed as John hembery

According to 1891 census Charles was 25 so born abt 1866.

It doesn't look like Winister to me, look at where the i is in the word.

It is badly written on the original document, but my guess is I or L minster. May be down to accent of Charles to a Welsh person doing the census, perhaps badly written due to indecisiveness. I can read the others on the page. :-)

Thanks I always thought it might have been misinterpreted to re accent. I wondered if winister was near Yeovil . Elizabeth was living in Cardiff when Charles lodged with the family :-)
