eRRolSheep Report 12 Jun 2013 20:23

A number of members have posted and contacted me saying that they have been experiencing problems accessing GR (and some other sites). In some cases this may be due to the recent site upgrade. However, whatever the reason I have put together a guide for members which, hopefully, they will find useful in a variety of situations.

It is written in simple plain English in a step-by-step style.

I have done different versions depending on how members wish to read the information.

If you are using Office Word 2007 or above click here...

If you are using an earlier version of Office Word click here...

If you prefer a PDF click here...

For an XPS file (similar to PDF) click here...

When you are viewing the file on-line, please feel free to leave any comments or suggestions by clicking the "Comments" button towards top right.

Once you have accessed the webpage from the links above, you can do one of the following...

1. Simply view on-line.

2. Print a copy by clicking on the little printer icon on the left hand side.

3. Save a copy to your computer by clicking on "File" on left hand side (below where it says CacheAndInternetProbs.....). On the menu that opens click on "Download" at the bottom. Depending on the version of Internet Explorer you are running, a box will open asking whether you wish to open or save the file. Select "Save" or "Save as" and it will save a copy to your computer which you can then open, print etc.

I hope this is of use to some members.

If you have any problems or would like the information in a different format or a format for visually impaired let me know - if enough people ask for a certain format I will convert the information.

Andysmum Report 12 Jun 2013 20:29

That is very generous of you.

Since switching from IE8 to Chrome, I have had no problems, but if I need a copy in the future, how do I get one, please?

Edited as you have answered my question.

Mersey Report 12 Jun 2013 20:35

Errol thats fantastic!!

You deserve me being nice to you tonight.... :-D

Its very generous, and kind and considerate for you to help others especially on here and others sites.... :-D

Bottle of the finest for you Sunshine <3

YG Report 12 Jun 2013 20:41

Errol, you are an absolute angel for taking the time to do all this. Thank you. Could I ask you to let me have the instructions for Google Chrome please. I would be eternally grateful and not be rude about your new red shirt anymore :-) :-) :-)

SylviaInCanada Report 13 Jun 2013 01:19

how great of you to do this, Errol

This thread deserves constant nudging to keep it in view.

AnotherCanuck Report 13 Jun 2013 02:58

Nudging up with thanks to Errol :-D

LadyScozz Report 13 Jun 2013 06:20

Wow Errol, thankyou. You have been awarded the Laaaambert Prize. <3

I'm not having problems right now..... but who knows!?

I'll copy & paste your advice in a doc just in case.

InspectorGreenPen Report 13 Jun 2013 06:51

Yes, very useful.

This has instructions for clearing your browser cache, which is important to do on a regular basis, and will significantly help to ensure web pages load properly and completely, especially relevant if you are having difficulty loading your or another members tree, which seems prone to problems if your cache is cluttered up.

Be careful before deleting cookies and passwords, though. If in doubt, don't.

Also be aware that certain sites or functions you might use may not work if you disable add-ons, so you still need the 'full' version for these to work properly.

However, it is unlikely to resolve problems such as the 'dreaded' error message some members are experiencing, so don't expect miracles.

OneFootInTheGrave Report 13 Jun 2013 07:54

ErrolSheep - excellent - many will appreciate this, well done

GeordiePride Report 13 Jun 2013 09:24

It's a huge thank you to Errol that the problems I was experiencing due to GR's change over have now been solved. Well done Errol.

TheBlackKnight Report 13 Jun 2013 10:06

I think GR owe Errol a big thank you for being so kind & doing what he has done. It's a pity GR did not think to do it for it's own members. Well done Errol.

Sue Report 13 Jun 2013 12:07

I second that TBK.

GR should be doing this. Errol, you are a STAR

eRRolSheep Report 13 Jun 2013 18:12

YG - I will be putting a version up for Google Chrome soon, done in exactly the same format if people find it easy to understand.

YG Report 13 Jun 2013 18:14
