A few people have asked me over the past couple of days about upgrading older versions of Internet Explorer so I have put another guide together for GR members.

Again, it is written in simple plain English in a step-by-step style.

I have done different versions depending on how members wish to read the information.

When you are viewing the file on-line, please feel free to leave any comments or suggestions by clicking the "Comments" button towards top right.

Once you have accessed the webpage from the links above, you can do one of the following...

1. Simply view on-line.

OR
2. Print a copy by clicking on the little printer icon on the left hand side.

OR
3. Save a copy to your computer by clicking on "File" on left hand side (below where it says CacheAndInternetProbs.....). On the menu that opens click on "Download" at the bottom.

Depending on the version of Internet Explorer you are running, a box will open asking whether you wish to open or save the file. Select "Save" or "Save as" and it will save a copy to your computer which you can then open, print etc.

I hope this is of use to some members.

If you have any problems or would like the information in a different format or a format for visually impaired let me know - if enough people ask for a certain format I will convert the information.

I'm getting a message on Ancestry saying they are not now supporting IE7 and to upgrade browser. This is odd, as I'm running IE10.....

Andrew - some websites do not yet recognise IE10.

However there is something you could just quickly check which MAY help.

1. Click on the "Tools" menu and then "Compatibility View settings".
2. In the window that opens, if there is a tick in the box next to "Display all websites in Compatibility View", remove it.
3. Click on "Close" and then try again to see if it makes a difference.
I cannot guarantee this will work but it can be one solution.

If you are using IE8 and get messages from Ay etc just change the browser user agent string and carry on - there is no need to even restart IE8. IE8 in XP cannot be upgraded.

If you read the instructions I have put together I do say that IE8 works with Vista onwards.

I think this means I have to upgrade my Windows XP to Windows 8 if I want to upgrade to Internet Explorer 8?
[Edit: I meant to say "if I want to upgrade to IE9"]

SueCar you do not need to upgrade to Windows 8 but you do need a newer version of Windows.
However I would not recommend Internet Explorer 8 anyway - it is very old and outdated. Windows 8 ships with Internet Explorer 10.
To run IE8 or IE9 you could see if you can get a copy of Windows 7 on ebay or Amazon if you don't want to buy a new computer - it will work out an awful lot cheaper. This does however depend on the specification of your computer.
I haven't put that very clearly so please ask or PM if you don't understand.
