Just purchased 2nd class stamps for my Christmas cards - they are 50p each!!!
The P.O. are single handedly going to put a stop to the sending of Christmas cards

And why are there 1st and 2nd class stamps? - I've never had a second post in living memory - in fact, my post hasn't even arrived today yet

If any of the other privatisations are anything to go by - you will get an even more severe shock this time next year :-(

They've been that for ages unfortunately, I won't be sending as many cards this year.

there will be a severe cut next year for sure - I can't understand why the greeting card companies are not lobbying parliament about this because the knock on effect will certainly harm their businesses

I may be mistaken, but I´m sure that I remember as a very small child getting 2 or 3 deliveries on Christmas Eve & one on Christmas morning,
Stamps would have been about 21/2d.

Good idea to buy 2 stamps for 50p each ((£1) and a card for 10p in Lidl, and insert one stamp inside the card.

That way you have wished someone a Happy Christmas and sent them a convenient present.

In 1840 it was 21/10d for the card and a penny for a black stamp. You could have put a penny black inside for the present and spent EXACTLY the same on them - £1.10 or 22/-.

So our cup floweth over. It is certainly half full. :-)

Ann Im dreading adding up all my cards up, that I have got to send, im not doing it yet although, I do love sending them :-) <3

I have been buying my stamps gradually over the last 6 months. Should have enough now. What I don't look forward to is posting the half dozen overseas cards, that makes 50p look like peanuts.

But I do love sending and receiving cards. Have dropped a few off but, as my hobby is making them as well, I count the postage as part of the expense of my hobby. :-)

let's hope the scouts can eventually cover the country so we can use them instead

Yes, the annoying thing is that, other than neighbours that I hand deliver, I don't send to anyone who the scouts could deliver to.

I'm fortunate that the vast majority of my cards can go by scout post which is very reliable and only 25p per stamp

Those who have computers will be getting electronic Christmas cards next year :-D

I don't want to boast, but we get a second post almost every other day!!




Unfortunately the first post is not from the Postie but from someone who lives over the road.

Must remember to send ( had delivered) a Christmas card to that kind family.

You are getting a wonderful bargain at 50 P, Ann!
International postage stamp to UK is $1.85 + 24 cents tax = $2.09 up to 30 grams weight.

( No sea mail for letters / cards nowadays.)

This is approximately £1.25 at the current exchange rate. (Down 10 P recently. Oh, such savings!)

Dare I say this is for what I might define as a general / standard size card.
Size indeed matters - to coin a phrase - and the price increases with size dramatically even within 30 grams!

Forget sending a full size calendar about 12 x 12 inches! You need a mortgage!

Other news is the price of stamps increases in the middle of each and EVERY January - usually by five cents. Two price rises as the tax increases, too!

BTW, I will NEVER send an electronic card to anyone.
I think it is a very undignified way at this special time - or for one's birthday - to do so.
Just my opinion, however. Each to his or her own.

BTW, AnnInGloucs, I recall last year many cards received from UK had 68 P stamps to well over £1.60. It did not seem to be the size or weight, merely inconsistent.

Regardless, it's nice to receive Christmas Cards - just as it is to receive a card when you lose a loved one and folks remember you.

If I seem a softie about Christmas and Christmas Cards - so be it!

Call me mean if you like, but I put 2 or 3 cards in one outer envelope to send to a relative who will pass them out to the rest of their locally living extended family.

I cannot do anything about the price of postage - all I know whereas some years back I used to send near a hundred - now with the speed which friends/relatives are falling off the perch it is around 50.

However in January last I purchased my cards from The Dogs Trust at a reduced price and this coming January it will be the turn of The Donkey Sanctuary. The Charities benefit and so do I. Been doing this for a few years now.

Er don't want to upset you but some cards are now too big to go at the normal 2nd or 1st class rate and have to as 'large letter' - I've just seen that I have ten of those to get rid of so they will be hand delivered ones
