Karen in the desert Report 29 Mar 2014 19:25

I got 10/13.
You scored better than 63% of the public, below 25% and the same as 12%.

It said I didn't answer one of the questions. Huh? I certainly didn't do that on purpose :-P

Of course it is possible to do "all right" without much in the way of education.

My cousin's father-in-law was the son of a blacksmith. He became a millionaire wh0 owned a motor franchise. He got started flogging RAF officer's cars at the end of ww2 when the black market was rife. His wife did all the accountancy and paperwork. Then as now the profit in the motor trade lay with lending money not selling and fixing the motors.

Problem is that approach only goes so far.

I know
Something I ought to say
Stuck here
Trying to find a way
And you know that you can't get away
And you know you can't hide it from yourself
Lonely nights, blue guitar
No way out, can only run so far
One way street, can only run so far
Can only run so far
(Clapton)

9 out of 13, I reckon I am quite pleased with that, considering I dropped out of Science after the Third year!

:-) :-)

12 of 13 but I lied about my age :-D

I was surprised to get that high it´s not my subject.

Considering the endless fuss about global warming. It is impossible to have even the most basic understanding without knowledge of the most found gasses which make up the atmosphere (nitrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen) and one rarer gas, ozone a variation of oxygen.

Some people on this board like gardening. How on earth do you do that properly without understanding such things as pH and salinity ? Science.

It is not uncommon to read in the press about the wicked bankers and the devil's derivatives - yet how many people have an inkling as to what a derivative is ? Maths.

The abysmal level of know how and ability in science and mathematics in the UK never ceases to amaze me. It is even more amazing that this is considered ok or even fashionable. The sad fact is that innumeracy is the main reason behind the UK yawning trade deficit and low wages.

It wasn't always so - 50 years ago skilled working men were highly numerate and likely to be in possession of HNC HND City & Guilds and so on.

:-(

fwiw I have 4 "A" levels all grade A inc pure&applied maths, taken a long time ago when Godfrey & Siddons tables and Thornton slide rules were the most popular mathematical aids.

Rollo, I never paid attention at school full stop

GSCE where not even a concept when i left school

I scored 11 out of 13, cannot believe i got the 2 wrong but hay ho, I did skip through it without much thought

Education is not the be all in life, I've done OK despite the lack of any formal school quarifications and far better than most of my mates who went on to further education and university

maggiewinchester with 3% for spelling your name right ... my classroom work got 'held back' when I was seven and not put up on the board with all the other children's for parents' night ... because I had spelt my name wrong

RolloTheRed those science classes were so long ago for me that nobody had even invented 'fracking', that took another two generations ! let alone sunscreen, we were still oiling our bodies for grilling in those days

but I got all the science answers in the quiz here right

a lifelong learner :-D

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 28 Mar 2014 16:24

Anybody who paid attention in GSCE science classes would be able to answer all of these they are hardly challenging.

You answered 13 of 13 questions correctly.
You scored better than 93% of the public and the same as 7%

12/13

Which gas makes up most of the Earth’s atmosphere?
You answered "Hydrogen"
The correct answer is "Nitrogen

That's the one which most people got wrong - only 20% of the sample answered correctly.

Oh well - as someone in the 'Science Stream' who failed all Science GCE's, not too bad :-)
