Quite a few of us do, if not on GR than on Findmypast.

What do you want the details for? Can you copy and paste from the free preview? Include the date of publication and the newspaper's name.

Betsey Pratt Shipley

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 8 Jan 2016 23:07

Just to check its about the right person..

...A Mrs Betsy Pratt living at Shipley was charged with attempting to poison 4 of her children. About 2 years ago Mrs Pratt who buried her first husband by whom she had 6 children, married again. etc etc.

If it is, its easier to send you the image than try to transcribe the lot!

Julie,
Lancashire Library had digital newspapers from the 19th century.
It's free to join, and free to look at the papers - just in case you have any other 'interesting' ancestors :-D

Wow -- thanks for that -- very interesting
I wondered why her first married name was on the census and her burial record-- I now know it is because she was separated from the second husband
Thanks once again

I found quite a few of mine in the (ahem) petty sessions.
'Drunk and Disorderly' appears to be a family trait :-S

love it

You're welcome Julie

Maggie - the only one I can find is being convicted of keeping a 'house of ill-repute' ;-)

Ooo-err, mine weren't THAT bad.
One tried to derail a train, (but claimed he was in the next village - pished) one didn't send his children to school, one demolished his neighbours sheds (but got away with it).
The rest just got very merrily drunk and disorderly - pished!!

...and that was the lot from Suffolk.

The Cornish lot were extremely well behaved - until the 20th century! :-S

I have a gamekeeper who had previously been a poacher, then got bopped on the head by 2 poachers who had seemingly been friends of his, at least until he tried to collar them :-D

He survived to give evidence in court against them

Any idea why it was a private investigation
They were a well known family around the area --could this be why ?

'Private Investigation'...

Difficult to tell. The incident wasn't reported to the police; they heard about it. The alledged evidence had already been destroyed. She already had a good circle of support who would ensure it didn't happen again?
One might think that if she was of the labourering class rather than a tradesman, she's have been jailed or sent to the gallows. As it was, it was recommended that she be sent to an asylum.
