I always wanted to do the sea trip to St Helena aboard the mail ship. Unfortunately St Helena now has a landing strip and the mail ship no longer runs.

They might reintroduce the mail ships - wasn't there something about the airstrip being dangerous? Something about strong cross winds. Or was that Tristan da Cuna :-S

Manchu Picchu, but don't think I would manage the climb now :-D :-D :-D :-D

The mail ship delivered to Tristan da Cunha as well. That is a place I have always been intrigued by. The population was evacuated to the Portsmouth area in about 1961 when the volcano threatened to erupt.

You are right, Det. It was St Helena where landing on the new airstrip proved to be hazardous. I take an interest in St Helena news because I have a friend from there who has lived here for many years now.

So I might get my voyage after all. Oh wow, I do hope so.

You'd better start saving up, Sharron. :-)

You fly to Cape Town, then 5 days on the mail ship, a week on St Helena and then 5 days back to Cape Town!

I have friends who were stationed there for a year (or maybe it was two) some years ago. They enjoyed the experience, but were glad they didn't live there permanently.

They are now in NZ, which is where I'd like to go, but OH doesn't like long flights as he finds sitting still uncomfortable.

It used to sail from Weymouth and the trip took three months. It was a three month trip of joy from what I read. Own steward, beef tea, a library, deck quoits.

Sharron,
My OH was talking about this very recently.

The last time that someone from his work went out there was a few years ago and... he went by the Mail Ship!
If OH decides to place a tender for the job this time around and if it's successful...., it's his turn to go to St Helena.

The Tristan da Cunhan's ended up living in a former RAF camp in Calshot, in the Service houses, and got jobs in the local area.
Some went back in 1963, but many didn't.
I moved to the area in 1967 and still remember 'Happy' Bill, who used to sweep the pavements, trim hedges, and anything else that needed doing, in Blackfield and Fawley and the long road in between (where I lived).
He also loved a chat :-D
