make sure the myheritage option for exporting pjotos is disabled

your problem is most likely that the dates in the exported ged file are not coompatible with GR; this can eb sorted out by running a macro which edits the dates; other FH programs also have problems importing MyHeritage ged files and the reeason is date format

you def. have no waky to get any sort of refund from GR

please note that people on these boards do not work for or reprsent GR

How can I use the site without uploading a family tree, mine has almost six thousand persons, not a task that I would like to carry out manually so I am maintaining that I am unable to use those items that my subscription does provide.

My gedcom comes from my MyHeritage site.

I will try to upload a sample of the file.
Thanks

Although like most things GR ( bugs, subs and so on) few members get the same experience I have found that GR is quite picky when it cmes to importing G£D files.

What program are you using to priduce the GED file in the first place?
What version of GED are you using ?
The files are in text format - can you post a short extract with say 10 records from yr GED file ?

The Small Claims Court fee is about £ 30 and in order to win a case you would need to prove a financial loss. As GR Trees inc upload/download are a free service you might find this difficult to do. The subs are for access to records and the right to post and send messages.

Still not able to upload a gedcom, but I am informed by the management that as this is a free service and does not form part of my subscription I can not get a refund. Lets see what the small claims court says!

The longer it takes you to find out the longer your membership might be considered for extension.

Probably an extension will mean you forfeit any loyalty bonus you get.

I sent an another short email to support on Friday re my gedcom.

I asked if they intended to contact me when the issue is resolved or do I/we just keep trying.

I received a response on Monday outlining the fault but my question remains unanswered.

I also suggested that the Support use their own boards to announce technical issues.
No reference to this was made in their reply

QUOTE:
As this issue does not impact all users, we are investigating the root causes to try to find a long term repair.
At this state we are not able to offer any timescale for rectification, however once this has been rectified, please do contact our team and we will make consideration for adjustment to your membership expiry date.

How am I expected to know when the issue is resolved?

If you still haven't managed to get your gedcom to upload after 3 months of trying, you could threaten them with the Small Claims court. Mind you, if you've only paid the Standard Rate, it's hardly worth the bother.

Are you on Facebook? As they don't like bad publicity, they might be more responsive if you post there.

You could write by snail mail to the company

As of 5 minutes ago.

Having logged on and read this morning's posts I clicked to export my tree. By the time I had looked at a couple of other threads an email with the ged attached arrived.

So at least the export part of the system is working again. Last time I clicked to export nothing arrived and I had to send a chaser to GR support.

Unfortunately I have not even been able to get my tree on the site in the first place so why should I pay the years subscription for what amounts to nothing?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 17 Aug 2016 03:52

John .............

everyone who has posted on this thread is a paying subscriber, just like you.

Free members can only build their tree, they cannot post on the Boards, nor can they contact other members.

We can only assume that they are happy with what they are getting out of GR.

If you are so unhappy, may I suggest that you download your tree t your computer, and tell GR why you are doing it and why you are leaving the site.

My gut feeling is the same as Detective's ................ that GR has a minimum of staff, and that all resources are going to FMP, with the intent that GR will be run down so far that the Competitions Board can do nothing else but agree that it should be shut down OR possibly left as a free or very low subscription site where members will help members, just as happens right now.

"a lack of interest from its management" - Yep. We've known that for a couple of years.

When Brightsolid bought the company from ITV, the monopolies commission insisted that Genes should remain a seperate entity to its sister company, Findmypast.

We strongly suspect that D C Thompson, who now own them both, want to run down GR so much that they can claim is must close. There has also been some interesting conversations with both past and current employees!

John Report 16 Aug 2016 19:16

Still no progress from support on the importing of gedcoms and whilst I appreciate the views of members who enjoy the free site I pay for mine and with some 6000 persons in my tree I am paying for nothing as there is no way that I have the time or inclination to enter them all manually.

I am currently being denied a refund or offered a timescale for the rectification of this problem. I think that this site is dying from a lack of interest from its management so the time, I think, is here to take matters further. :-S

They have one thing in common Sylvia.....
They are both female. !

Slightly better that one or two that I've had in the past.
Male matched to female.
Born in different time periods AND in completely different countries.
LOL

This was one of the Hot Matches I received in late 2014.

Mary Smith
Y.O.B: 1779
Place: Launton, Oxfordshire
Children: 4

matched with

Elizabeth Powell
Y.O.B: 1685
Place: Towcester, Northamptonshire

:-D :-D

I've only had a couple since that time

Is it any wonder that I'm not worried if I never receive any more ????????? :-D :-D

GlasgowLass

GlasgowLass Report 10 Aug 2016 11:10

I thought exactly as you did Kense so I deleted all my hot matches over a year ago.

I uploaded my last gedcom in April of this year
In June I received new hot matches

Some of the hot matched individuals do indeed appear in my tree but, they have been matched to complete randomers.

I have deleted all them today.

Kense

Kense Report 10 Aug 2016 09:51

If you upload a GEDCOM then the GR software ought to delete all the previous Hot Matches and start hot matching from scratch.

It doesn't seem to do that and the result is that hot matches in the store do not link with the correct people and thus look ridiculous. I have 11 hot matches since the last GEDCOM upload (about a year ago) and they are all good. I discarded all the previous ones.

John

John Report 10 Aug 2016 06:18

I do not feel that even a FREE program is worthwhile if you can not get started by the very basic action of uploading a gedcom file. Why take on new memberships?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Aug 2016 00:49

GlasgowLass ...........

you're lucky if you had Hot Matches as recently as June

some of us haven't had them for years!

Not that that worries me personally as so far every Hot Match that I've had has shown that I have more information than anyone else researching my families ............ and I was often matched with the information that I had supplied :-D

I understand that you would only be matched IF aome one else had updated their tree(s).

If no-one has updated since the last time your 20 names were matched, then you would not get any new Hot Matches.
