Presumably you know your grandparents' names and roughly when they married. Try finding their marriage and buying the cert, that should give you both their fathers' names and occupations. Try using the freebmd site for finding the marriage. Depending on where and when the marriage took place, you might find the parish record online. This all assumes that the family is English or Welsh, you will need different sites for other countries.

As Detective says, if you want more help post on Find Ancestors.

Welcome to GR & the boards Maureen.

If you have an idea when & where he died, you should be able to find his death registration on the GRO indices. That will give his date or year of birth. It may not be completely accurate as the informant may not have known.

Assuming he was born before 1911, he should be on the census taken that year.

If there are too many people of the same name, you might need to buy his marriage certificate to find out his father's name.

Although it's more satisfying to find out for yourself, if you get stuck you could always post again on Find Ancestors.
