The Department of Homeland Security said yesterday that nationality or citizenship is not a determination of being a terrorist ......... so it sounds as though they might be pushing back against Trump's desire to ban citizens of the 6 countries.


Just incidentally, the Canada - US border is the longest undefended border in the world. We don't have a wall or a fence ................. and hundreds of asylum seekers who had made it into the US and were waiting for decisions on their status are now making their way to the border and crossing between border posts, walking through deep snow and ice. No-one has yet lost their life, but at least 2 men lost all finger and some toes to frostbite after crossing into Manitoba at Christmas. They are still in hospital which shows how badly injured they were.

Canada has an agreement with the US to the effect that someone who has been granted asylum in the US cannot later be granted asylum in Canada .......... they should be returned to the US. That's why these asylum seekers cross illegally instead of going through the manned border posts.

The majority of them seem to be from Africa .......... Ghana, Somalia, etc ............. who made their way to South America, then across as many as 9 countries to Mexico, sneaked across the US border, and then claimed asylum.

Many of them were robbed and assaulted on the journey ...... and several of them say they lost not only all their money but also their passports.

That means no proof of identity

BUT many of these people (including babies carried over in car seats) also belong to either the nationality or religion denounced by Trump.

Trump has an Achille's heel. The Democrats gained 2 Senate seats in Nov cutting the GOP maj to 6. Thus 4 rebels and Trump measures fail. That is why he is trying to run the country by decree.

In the 2018 mid terms several GOP seats are v marginal and senators will be v sensitive to how their voting record looks. Voting funds for the Mexican wall for instance will def not be a vote winner with floating voters. Neither will be carrying out executive decisions by force and financial threat.

After a few months bluff and bravado have failed Trump may well tire of being POTUS and leave the day job to the grown ups some of whom are already in post.

..... and his latest - banning the Beeb (among others) from news conferences. The way around that, of course, is for the favoured journos to pass the news on to other colleagues.

I can imagine it now. He'll ban them too and end up with no one there.

May we be forgiven for thinking that USA democracy (and there's a laugh itself) is beginning to resemble a dictatorship?

It'll simply be a minor irritation once the Pacific rim nations start to bite. Then the hijinks will begin.
