OH was a DJ for far too long and thinks he knows the lot about pop music. It keeps him happy I suppose.

The other night there was a programme about a choir in a church and they were rehearsing 'Morning Has Broken' in a church. OH, who evidently never went to school assembly, said 'That's a funny thing to be doing, playing a Cat Stevens song in a church!'

Oh well.

He frolicked in the morning mist too. That would be after it had broken I suppose, and the mist came out.

AAwwww Cat Stevens would be so proud

All together now

Morning has broken like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird
Praise for the singing
Praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the world

Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass

That reminds me of school morning assemblies....Remember them?

Every Friday, in both my Primary and Junior Schools, straight after morning assembly we would sit crossed legged on the hall floor learning, by rote, new 'hymns'.

Anyone remember 'The Lord of the Dance':-D

And 'Give Me Oil in my Lamp' :-D

The one we all chose was 'When a Knight Won His Spurs'.

I am not sure Sydney Carter had even written ' Lord of the Dance' when I was at school.

I always liked ' Lord of All Hopefulness' and had it at Fred's funeral because I had no inkling as to what hymn he might like but knew that he would dislike intensely anything I might choose, out of pure cantankerousness, so thought I would please myself!

I spent a lot of time in infants school wondering who Percy was.

We often sang about him in assembly, his full name being Percy Vere.

His name cropped up several times in the hymn, Jesus good above all other.

Junior school hymn singing practice usually included Let all the World, in every corner sing.....

We never got the phasing right to the satisfaction of the elderly teacher, so next week we had to sing it again.

In Mevagissey, Primary School, we started every morning with a loud blast of 'Trelawney' :-D :-D :-D

A good sword and a trusty hand!
A merry heart and true!
King James's men shall understand
What Cornish lads can do!
And have they fixed the where and when?
And shall Trelawny die?
Here's twenty thousand Cornish men
Will know the reason why!

And shall Trelawny live? Or shall Trelawny die?
Here's twenty thousand Cornish men
Will know the reason why!
Out spake their Captain brave and bold:
A merry wight was he:
Though London Tower were Michael's hold,
We'll set Trelawny free!
'We'll cross the Tamar, land to land:
The Severn is no stay:
With "one and all," and hand in hand;
And who shall bid us nay?

And shall Trelawny live? Or shall Trelawny die?
Here's twenty thousand Cornish men Will know the reason why!
And when we come to London Wall,
A pleasant sight to view,
Come forth! come forth! ye cowards all:
Here's men as good as you.
'Trelawny he's in keep and hold;
Trelawny he may die:
Here's twenty thousand Cornish bold
Will know the reason why

And shall Trelawny live? Or shall Trelawny die?
Here's twenty thousand Cornish men Will know the reason why!

Actually had Cat Stevens singing that at my younger brothers funeral a few years ago

He wasn't religious so they had songs from artists he loved

He was the singer in a group called The Invaders in the early 1960, s

They went on Ready Steady Win , a show filmed by ATV I think ,in the midlands

It was a bit like Britains Got Talent

They came second in the final

Were also on top of the pops one time

I was a bit worried when some time ago I kept hearing music one of the songs was give me oil in my lamp and how much is that doggie in the window... along with a few others , I thought I was going mad, so had a look on line and it seems is common to hear noise all due to tinnitus, lots of folk said they had the same problem , so that made me feel a whole lot better and now I just ignore it...

Chris in Sussex, I have found that from most of the weddings I have been to recently, that the top three hymns selected are Lord of the Dance, Give me Oil in My Lamp and One More Time Around the World I Go. One can almost guarantee that over half the weddings will have two of those in the service.

Scary indeed. Some call it internal dialogue, some call it clairaudience.
My FIL had tinnitus, he got a buzz out of it.

That's interesting.
I've never heard any of them at a wedding.
We did sing Lord of the Dance at a funeral last year though.

Kense

Kense Report 18 Mar 2017 20:38

As a bellriinger I go to several weddings per year and it is the exception if at least one of those three isn't sung. They are CofE weddings so it may not apply to other denominations.
