I sure that both can be done Maddie. It would be a pity not to take advantage of the opportunities that are there.

Do you have a name for the smallholding in WoT?

I only ask cos it may be in one of the Bristol Past books and I have a few of them especially local ones as I live half a mile up the road from WoT.

Hi Jax
Part of my Welsh family originally came from Cornwall/Devon too and moved to where the work was I believe.

I will have to have a serious read of my tree to see what I need to research or look out for. Must try and get some addresses jotted down to see if there are any photographs of the area too.

Am looking forward to meeting you and the others. :))

~~~~~ waves to everyone
I am also a newby Fair goer... from what I can gather, it will give you an opportunity to purchase stuff like charts and acid free paper, plus discuss with stall holders the areas/names you are researching, so a list of the names would be good.. also, there will be people from the Devon and Cornwall FHS there.... they will have general info of where you can go to do various bits of research, too. I am a member of both, but haven't figured out how to use all the info yet (I know, I am a proper numpty)
I think some of the stalls will have stuff like photos... or info on where to go to get hold or ask about them.
I think it is a fairly small area, indoors in a large hall... there is a cafe on site where drinks and lunches are served from 12 until 2 and then on somewhere later, where depends on how many of us there are, lol
Maddie, sounds like you are more Welsh than me, lol..... 5 of my Gt grandparents were from Devon or Cornwall, one was from half Welsh/English, and two who were very Welsh... both were Welsh speakers!!
A right mongrel, me, lol!
What'll be even more weird is if you have any connections with me, lol......
Pinch, Impey... they are the main two of mine that may be connected to branches in your neck of the woods... haven't gone far enough back yet to make a proper connection other than a tingle in my tummy!!
Claire, it would seem most of South Wales has connections... the Cornish miners were considered the best, so they followed the work.
I have just c & p'd this straight from the site!!
Our Open Day is always the highlight of the Society's year. It gives us the chance to meet members from all over the country, who come to visit and view the many stalls. And it gives you, the researchers, the chance to view the stalls not just of each of our branches but also those of other Family History Societies and organisations from as far afield as Cornwall, and the stands of booksellers, microfiche producers, specialist computer software retailers and many others.
We hold our Open Day in the ever popular venue of County Hall in Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran, and the previous Open Days held there were voted a resounding success by all who attended: this was thanks to the enthusiasm and hard work of Malcolm Otton, its Organiser, and all our other volunteers.
Each year, our own Society has nine stalls.
Gwent FHS - Abergavenny/Monmouth Branch
Gwent FHS - Blackwood Branch
Gwent FHS - Chepstow Branch
Gwent FHS - Ebbw Vale Branch
Gwent FHS - Newport Branch
Gwent FHS - Pontypool Branch
Gwent FHS - Publications Sales
Gwent FHS - Trips
Gwent Pedigrees
Ten other neighbouring Family History Societies are attending to date, each with their own stall:
Bristol & Avon FHS
Cardiganshire FHS
Cornwall FHS
Dyfed FHS
Glamorgan FHS
Gloucestershire FHS
Herefordshire FHS
Powys FHS
Weston super Mare FHS
Devon FHS
... and sixteen other specialist Societies and stalls:
Blaenau Gwent Library Services
Brecon, Radnor & Monmouthshire Marriage Index (1754-1812)
Cornish Forefathers Society
Gwent County Record Office & Friends
... as well as sixteen other commercial stalls selling or advising on specialist books, maps, computer software, and other genealogy aids (mostly the familiar names of our friends who support us each year, but including one or two welcome new names):
AMP Photography
Bryan Ford Postcards
David Williamson Postcards
