Not seeing a birth in Portsmouth. How did you hear about her?

Can you access old newspapers from the time?

Unknown Report 9 May 2012 23:23

joyce greenwood died in the 80s she left me with my dad in Morecambe in 1949 then again took me away in 1950 saying my dad was not my dad.after a few days she again abandoned me and went to live in Portsmouth.I met her years later she was living with a bob Hopkins in Scotland.
my Grandad and step gran raised me with 15 other children, life was hard.
one of the few that is alive and in her 80s , after finding out i was ill told me that my mother had a baby girl in Portsmouth when i was about 5 yrs old , she left her at a police station saying " a girl had had the child and left her at her home"
This was untrue and she was arrested and served 6months in prison for this crime.
I have tried the police in Portsmouth local radio and the news paper but no one seemed interested.
Four years ago i got married and for the first time found my mother was married to my dad due to getting my full birth certifcate.
Since then i have found one half brother and sisters after 59yrs thinking i was an only child.
My father died months before we found them. Now to be told my mother had a second child she also left.
So think she would still be a Greenwood. Regards Allen

jax Report 9 May 2012 23:34

Have you tried looking for a birth for her on freebmd?

brummiejan Report 10 May 2012 08:40

Rather than try contacting a local paper, you need to view newspapers of the time. You would need to view these at the local archives, normally at the main library for the area.
There 4 births in Portsmouth after 1949 with MMN Hirst, though none with surname Greenwood. 3 are girls, born 1957 & 1960. I wonder if there is any chance she was using another surname at this time?

Gwyn in Kent Report 10 May 2012 14:25

If you check the Portsmouth area births for girls born with mother's maiden name HIRST, as suggested by brummiejan, you will find a name that matches to a name on a GR member's tree.
Look for the child's name in SEARCH TREES and contact the tree holder to hopefully share information.

Well, we do our best!
If you haven't already, might be worth contacting NORCAP for some 'professional' advice.
Good luck.

With all your help i think i might have found something ? Joyce known as hirst,Greenwood,Hopkins or Walker.
I have gone into Hopkins births and found a Jane S Hopkins born 1955 Portsmouth, mothers name Hopkins.
I have put her name in but come up with a blank, can you lovely people help me any more.
kind regards Marilyn and Allen

brummiejan Report 10 May 2012 19:50

Where did you find that then! You have put Joyce and Jane - sorry to be dim, what does that mean?

jax Report 10 May 2012 20:10

If her maiden name was Hirst, why say it was Hopkins? but it would not be the first time this sort of thing has happened.

You will have to purchase the cert to see if the mother had the same first name

Rambling Rose

Rambling Rose Report 10 May 2012 20:24

Just to go back a minute, there is a Jane Greenwood registered 1953, but the mother's maiden name is Perry, though there doesn't seem to be a Greenwood/Perry marriage in Portsmouth to match up ( though there was one elsewhere so can't be discounted that that particular couple. moved).

EDIT sorry I had missed a bit of what you had posted, that the child was only a few days old when that would eliminate the Jane born 1953.

What name did Joyce die under and where did she die?

Unknown Report 10 May 2012 20:31

Sorry its me.My Husbands mother Joyce Hirst married a Allen Greenwood in Jan 1949 my husband also Allen was born in Feb 49 she then left them, We found out she met someone call Hopkins and Walker so i cannot find a female with the name Greenwood but have found one for Hopkins so Joyce could have married or changed her name.My husband never knew who his father was or that his mother married him until 4 years ago as in those day it was a big secret

Is this her birth?

Births Mar 1931
Hirst Joyce Banks Auckland 10a 377

jax Report 10 May 2012 20:47

Whether she remarried or not her maiden name should stay the same...but it can happen that mothers give the wrong name

Unknown Report 10 May 2012 21:09

Joyce died in the 80s we think in county durham with the name of walker.

But now thinking she was with Bill or Bob Hopkins in Portsmouth so this baby girl might have the name Hopkins but being abandoned only a few days old in 1954 she must have been adopted.

If she were born in 1930/1931 and died in the 80s, there are no deaths that fit under any of those surnames.
