If Henry and Annie Taylor were her aunt and uncle they are not Irish if the correct 1911 census has been posted.

Have you considered applying for their marriage certificate for information on his Father, to check further back?

jax

jax Report 24 May 2014 21:48

Why Ireland? Cornelius isn't an Irish name....that's of course if it was her fathers name? and not one she made up

Where is her birth registration as it wasn't May Rosina Taylor unless she wasn't born in this country?

Shirley, and Patchem and Jax
Many thanks for all the above.

My husband never knew about most of his family, being the youngest child,(born 1933) so he never met Cornelius, grandfather. On her marriage cert. May never put that her father was deceased.

I can confirm that at the time of her marriage - May was living at 7 Pearcroft Rd, E17, with a Henry and Annie Taylor. And to make things more confusing in 1910 another Taylor, Herbert, resided at May Cottage, 7 Pearcroft Rd, but with no connection as far as I can see.

GR Anthony Adolphe told me he thought Cornelius Taylor could have come over from Ireland with a name like that.
I have tried this line too.

All the other Cornelius' in Census 1901 and 1911, I have gone through.

I think the only person who may know the answer is Harold's son, Ian.

I thank you all for your kind help and work, but feel I mustn't take up any more of your time. Believe me if I do solve the mystery, I will be in touch.
Kind regards
Ruth

So was it Henry and Annie that May lived with?

patchem

patchem Report 24 May 2014 08:36

On your prior searches for her on the ancestry message boards you have put that you believe she was brought up by an aunt and uncle.

Do you know who these people were?

Or is this the relevant family:

'Trying to find details of a Henry George Taylor, born Bow, approx. 1870, who had an older brother Cornelius, born 1865.

Henry was living with an Annie at 7 Pearcroft Road, Leytonstone (then Essex) in 1918. If anyone could help me with either Henry or Cornelius' details, I would be grateful.'

Did those prior searches find her in 1901 or 1911, and are you convinced Cornelius and Henry are correct?

With the name 'Cornelius' and 'engineer', I thought of a birth overseas, or anywhere in the country, when you seem convinced she was born locally.

As has been stated above, any details can be wrong, or names added, or incorrectly remembered, including her date and year of birth and father's names.

What does your husband know of his grandfather Cornelius - where and when did he die?

jax

jax Report 23 May 2014 20:32

I am not doubting what you have been told.....but as I said my grandfather took 3 years off his age and as far as we were aware my grandmother didn't know any different.
Also there are no May Rosina's born at that time.....so did she just add the middle name because she liked it...or maybe she thought that was her name? as I said my grandmother added two completly different names on her marriage cert.....not that she was trying to hide anything, she just thought they were her names until she applied for a birth cert many years later to obtain a passport

Ruth

Ruth Report 23 May 2014 19:55

Shirley, I have May Rosina Taylor definitely on Marriage Cert. with father's name as Cornelius Taylor, engineer.

Jax, May did tell me personally that there was 9 yrs difference between her and her husband, Albert Edward, as Albert got a divorce from an Annie Charles in 1915. May was 21 years and Albert was 30 years on Marriage cert 23/3/1918.

You must admit it's rather an unusual name to give - Cornelius Taylor, as her father.

Also May's first daughter, was given the names Gladys May Rosina. Born 1920.

I've even tried to trace the witnesses at May and Albert's wedding to see if that could give me some clues. They were J H Taplin and M. Taplin. But I suppose they could have been pulled off the street to act as witnesses.

Thanks for your time and interest, much appreciated.

Thanks Shirley and Jax for your immediate help. Didn't expect replies so quick. I am trying to solve the mystery for my husband Douglas Saunders of why we cannot find a birth cert. for his mother.

I have May's marriage cert. to Albert Edward Saunders, 23/3/1918, which gives her father as Cornelius Taylor, an engineer, also death cert of May Rosina, 29th June 1982. This was certified by Harold Percy Saunders, May's eldest son.
who was reg. Dec 1918. I do know that Harold had a son, Ian R. born approx. 1955/6. I did speak to Ian in 2002 when his father died and asked him if he would share any info. he might find from his father's papers. But this never materialised.
Ian did live in Essex at that time and was married to Janet.

Many thanks for your help. I've been trying since 2000 to find May's birth certificate. ONS cannot find her and 1901 and 1911 Census doesn't show her.
