This is a real long shot I know, but I've got to try - I have some beautiful letters which were written by a teenage girl - Susan Powell - who was living in Canada to my great Aunt who was her pen pal and was living in the Winnipeg/Manitoba area.

They were written between 1944/45 and I have often wondered not only what became of the articulate Susan, but also if she is either still alive or married and has family still living if they wouldn't want these letters back as an insight into their relations life.

If anyone has any information, or better ideas on how to find out what happened to Susan - please get in touch! As she wouldn't have married till the late 40's or 50's/60's if she did, I assume there's no access to those records without having more information?!

Welcome to the boards, Claire.

Do you think she was about the same age as your aunt, if so, about what year would she have been born?

Thank-you

Claire

Claire Report 5 Sep 2014 08:46

I don't have an exact age except I know that the school Susan was attending was a Junior high which would have made her approximately 15 I believe when the letters were written giving an estimated birth year I around 1930ish? my great aunt was a tiny bit older but of a sickly constitution so possibly young for her age.

There is a Susan Powell, 1930, Toronto, Ontario, in a tree on here.
Have you tried to contact the tree owner?

Does she mention the names of any family member in any of her letters?

Name: Miss Susan Powell

possible parents John and Isabel

(But think this one is not showing on 1965 list with John and Isabel, so probably born later than 1930?)

Thank you all for your replies - I have a couple of addresses in Winnipeg, but that's all - as well as her Junior High School name which was the Robert H Smith School Winnipeg, but no parents names unfortunately - though she mentions that her father works getting jobs for Veterans coming back from war as he was deemed to old to fight in WW2.

Do you think we could have the addresses in Wpg? We may be able to find the parents on the Canadian voters list and go from there.

Maureen

Edit: PS-That's such a nice gesture on your part,Claire. :-) :-)

Sorry, thought it was your aunt who lived in Winnipeg, so was looking for Susan's not in Winnipeg.

Claire

Claire Report 6 Sep 2014 21:03

Sorry Patchem! Anywhere really in Canada as I only know of Winnipeg in 1944/45.

The last address I had for them, which they moved to in July 1944 was 28 Cordova Street, Winnipeg.

The address before that was 425-16th Street, Brandon, Manitoba.

Thanks for all your searching everyone!

Darn! I don't think the years 1940-44 are on the Voters List for Brandon-they seem to pop up again in 1945. A Mr and Mrs H W Thomson are at 425-16th Street in 1945.

The person with Susan in his tree also has Eric and Jane, but not Carol.

But with all that information out about her, there will be other ways of contacting her.
