To be honest, if someone opened their tree to me, then asked to see mine, I'd want to know who we had in common.

Many members have trees going back several generations, include siblings and then 'their' spouse and descendents. We may only be remotely related, but with a genetic link. Hence their inclusion.

Wait and see what happens. If the messages have been read but not replied to within 24 hours of then, send another message but with a more in-depth explanation

OK - good hint, I will do. I am hoping that when they look at my tree they can determine whether there is a match to be made, as I gave access first before emailing, and then requesting - hopefully this meets protocol for those who still check in here.

Check that the messages on GR have been read by looking at them in your 'Sent' mail box. Unopened ones still have an envelope icon next to them.

Members are more likely to reply if you've explained your relationship and ask them about theirs. 'Please may I see your tree'? tends to get ignored.

Got that one, I have scoured Ancestry UK for weeks, not a lot is coming up that is new however. And zip on the Columb line, though I have requested access to a couple of trees on here which look promising, nothing yet however!

Both he and his son are fetching chaps:-) !!

A descendant of Quentin Leo Doherty ( elio156) has a tree on Ancestry (and a lovely photo of Quentin).

So my next issue will be finding the living ones - ideas welcome! Odd names are helpful however:-) I think you are all amazing, by the way, you are very good at this family history thing! So thank you.

Right, of course. I shall transcribe this to a page where I can order it correctly, it is too easy to jump to assumptions in this game when the chains of logic are there. Apologies!

Eringobragh1916 Report 24 Aug 2015 17:11

If you look at what I posted Cecil O Doherty is listed on the 1911 Census as a student at Letterkenny St Eunans..so he certainly was alive 1911 as was Kathleen living with her parents.

Gritty

Gritty Report 24 Aug 2015 16:31

According to the 1901 census Kathleen and Cecil were born in Scotland- the results I put up were just those born in Donegal Ireland.

Amba Report 24 Aug 2015 15:42

I will try and order it - thank you! No idea why it wouldn't let me in. I presume it will list her parents, which would be nice to know. She is the invisible woman far as any more info is concerned, not even showing up in the deaths.

If all the children have come up listed together, matching what I have found, then it is surely the one family, this is good! Will update tree accordingly and see what else creates a hit. No Cecil on that list, or Kathleen, but I think he lived - she may not have.

Yes, Scotland people won't let me buy credits for some reason, its flicked the card three times and locked me out - I suppose because I am far away! Will try again tomorrow and see if it works. Have not yet found any verification that the Oakes mother listed for the next generation births is indeed the Agnes mentioned.

Have done some looking and it seems like there are verified though diverse listings for these strangely named kids! I have (thus far)
A. O'Doherty 1897
Cecil 1898
Kathleen 1900
Eileen 1901
Daniel 1904
Kevin 1905
Quentin 1907
Noeleen 1908

then a bit of a gap ? and two more with the O dropped from O'Doherty
Columb (elsewhere listed as Colm MD born 1909) 1913
Margarete 1915

Having said that a few of the names seem to have trickled down from the siblings to the next generations far as I can see - would indicate 8 for Helen is correct as at 1911 - I think.

Eringobragh1916

Eringobragh1916 Report 24 Aug 2015 12:09

Amba, This is the site that Gritty referred to for the marriage

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

Amba

Amba Report 24 Aug 2015 11:28

One last query - how on earth do I get to that marriage information, the last few hours online have not yielded any access to the Scottlsh marriage registers, or am I looking in the wrong places?

Amba

Amba Report 24 Aug 2015 08:41

Wow, I was admittedly having trouble from the antipodes (NZ) that is for sure! I never thought to look for the marriage in Scotland. I did find the birth info however for the children, and have messages out to those on here regarding the tree links, there are only a couple however.

Thank you - I think I may get some progress with this added in. I had found the grandfather and grandmother in a different search but couldn't connect them except for a hint regarding the sisters name, so moved on.

I am genuinely impressed, and grateful, in just a day too!! You are both amazing. Thank you so much.
