Pam

Pam Report 19 Sep 2015 16:57

Aw yes it is him it is very sad. George came off his cycle and hit his head and died not long after he was their only son.
I do have the Cowdell's back to 1797 I think it was when Enoch Cowdell was born in Stockport. Cheshire. .
He was the young George's great grandfather.
I also have Carie's family back to her grandfather.

The family seemed to be struck by tragedy as Levi and Carie had 2 daughters die young both named Ida then young George too.

So sorry I was replying off my phone earlier and missed the 1901 census you put up

Mazy must be Mary Eliza. I think she was actually staying with her uncle Iram cowdell and his family nearby on the 1901! Im going from memory as my files aren't available to me at the moment. I'll have them to hand tomorrow.

Yes the two Ida's are the half sisters to Mary Eliza.

That's so sad about your grandson and I can empathise, my great nephew was killed the same way aged twelve. A sad waste of young lives isn't it.

Pam

Pam Report 19 Sep 2015 19:37

I will try the Wharfedale death cert for Mary Eliza.

Pam

Pam Report 19 Sep 2015 21:01

Someone did look ups on the census for me when I was researching my tree as I didn't have access to them and never mentioned a Mazy.
I have no idea about her at all!

Pam

Pam Report 19 Sep 2015 21:08

Ah it's my mums mother Mary Elizabeth having Mary Eliza is the half sister.
I never knew they called her Mazy though it must have been confusing having two Mary E's.
Mums mum was named after Levi's older sister or the mother and step mother of Enoch Cowdell, no one in the family was sure which.

malyon Report 19 Sep 2015 22:19

it say's on the 1911 census that carrie had 5 children 3 still a live 2 died that would be the 2 ada's so there is another child but not on the 1911 census

Pam

Pam Report 20 Sep 2015 08:17

It was the two Mary's and George still alive and yes the two Ida's who died.

malyon

malyon Report 20 Sep 2015 15:31

i just cant make out why you would call 2 children mary elizabeth and that you never knew about the the mary born 1895

Pam

Pam Report 20 Sep 2015 16:34

Mary Eliza was Carie's daughter before she married Levi.
Mary Elizabeth is a Cowdell family name but even though I wouldn't have called my second child the same first name as my first I've no idea why they did.
As for mazy is never heard of her until you mentioned her.

My mums mother Mary Elizabeth married in 1920 and my mum never saw her again as she went to live in Cornwall along with her nan Carie and aunt Mary Eliza.
My grandson is coming later to get my files out for me.

malyon Report 20 Sep 2015 18:26

do you know if the other mary elizabeth 1895 married and what happened to her

Pam

Pam Report 20 Sep 2015 20:54

Mary E Cowdell born 1892 is Mary Eliza (fowler) she took on the name Cowdell when her mother Carie married Levi. Hence her name as Mary Eliza F Cowdell on her marriage.

Mazy E Cowdell born 1895 is my mums mother Mary Elizabeth Cowdell mistranscribed as Mazy or as you say maybe a nickname but it was never used on any other census as far as I know!

Hope this clarifies them.
Regards
Pam
