Albert, Rose and children in 1921 - in Strathcona - so the travel record I posted on page 1 is possibly correct, showing John going to his uncle in 1912, but travelling alone.

(Charles Johnson is an unrelated red herring.)

Albert Manning
in the 1921 Census of Canada
Name: Albert Manning
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Married
Age: 39
Birth Year: abt 1882
Birth Place: England
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's Name: Rose Manning
Father Birth Place: England
Mother Birth Place: England
Year of Immigration: 1910
Racial or Tribal Origin: English
Province or Territory: Alberta
District: Strathcona
District Number: 11
Sub-district: Edmonton (City)
Sub-District Number: 42
City, Town or Village: City of Edmonton
Section Number: 101 39 81 Ave
Occupation: Bricklayer
Income: 1200
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
Albert Manning 39
Rose Manning 39
Alberta Manning 5
Rupert A Manning 4

However, Albert's a bricklayer, not a farmer, so maybe John went to a different uncle to start with ?? Or maybe Albert changed his occupation.

new info has come to light, john hector was raised by his aunt and uncle, his mothers sister Rosa and her husband Albert Manning, still do not know why?

Re NOK -

Perhaps he gave the wrong year for his birth in order to claim to be 18? He was really only 16 when he joined up.

Perhaps he didn't want his parents to know he was doing that? Or maybe they had refused to allow it, so he'd asked his brother instead?

Perhaps he'd fallen out with his parents, or was getting into trouble, so they'd decided to send him to Canada for a fresh start?

Re Ivor going to and returning from Canada - can't see any travel record for either journey. Not so far, at least.

Hi , there is a lot of confusing info here, John Hector was born in 1899 at wellington somerset, Harold was his brother but why not either mother Eliza or father as nok, his father(John Henry) was in the marines when he met Eliza. My mother told me that Eliza took Jack(John Hector) and Ivor to Canada and came back with only Ivor? The family story relates to Eliza leaving him with her brother for some reason.

John Hector with inaccurate details - although transcription is correct compared with image:

John's occupation is plumber, and he's not married.

What were the surnames of uncle James and step-uncle Jesse?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 Mar 2017 16:20

I wondered if Henry Charles could be a cousin of John H, but John's father was born Broad Oak, Kent, according to the 1911 census, and Henry Charles's father was born Ipswich, so not likely to be brothers.

If the John H in the travel record is John Hector, I suppose it's possible that he wasn't travelling with Henry Charles, and they may have been two unrelated Johnsons who just happened to be on the same ship.

Or maybe John H is not John Hector!

Here's the same pair of travellers, from the Canadian records:

John H Johnson
in the Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935
Name: John H Johnson
Gender: Female
Age: 11
Birth Year: abt 1901
Date of Arrival: 1 May 1912
Vessel: Sicilian
Port of Arrival: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Port of Departure: Plymouth, England

This time Charles is listed as Henry C, single.
Beside John's name it says "to uncle farmer with [what looks like] P19 L 17 "

They're going to different destinations - Henry Charles to Ottawa, Ont., and John to Strathcona, Alberta.
Maybe unrelated travellers after all.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 Mar 2017 16:05

There's no likely travel record for 1911 that I can see, but several possibilities for years around that, with birth years approx. 1899.

Maybe ???

Jno H Johnson
in the UK, Outward Passenger Lists, 1890-1960
Name: Jno H Johnson
Gender: Male
Age: 11
Birth Date: abt 1901
Departure Date: 19 Apr 1912
Port of Departure: Plymouth, England
Destination Port: Quebec, Canada
Ship Name: Sicilian
Shipping line: Allan Line
Official Number: 111225
Master: A J Peters

Probably travelling with a Charles Johnson, stone-cutter, aged 20.

Hi thanks to you all that has been a great help. I still do not know why my great grandmother left him in canada, she came home with just my grandfather. there is a family story that needs verification, that he was left with his uncle james or step uncle jesse. I hope to find some relatives who can shed some light.
Thanks again

The findagrave entry says Alice's maiden surname was Hahn - presumably they married after John moved to Canada.

The gravestone is hard to read, but shows daughters Viola Hepworth, Irene [surname obscured], and D Jacqueline Jo . . . . [presumably Johnson].
