You're welcome Jean. A bit more detail from the service records as you think they are your McFadyen's

Thomas was 5' 1/2", 35" chest and had a scar on left thigh. He served in France 8/5/17 - 17/11/19. He applied for a pension and was awarded 5s 6d from 9/9/1920 - marital status was still single.. His disability was loss of teeth.

Hugh was 5' 21/2" weighed 118ibs. He was 22y 10m when joined 22/2/15 and a painter - he was discharged 5 days later, it states he had defective vision. He married Jane Forrester in August 1910, it dosen't say when she died, but his son was 4 years old.

Thanks again for this Flip, very interesting,

Thomas still not married though, still not been able to find a marriage for him to Janet McLachlan so I am presuming they never got hitched even though they had a son Thomas in 1915 and she is shown as janet McFadyen on her son's marriage certificate in 1938 and deceased by then .

Still can't find a death for her in Glasgow either with McFadyen or McLachlan but I will keep looking,

How well do they check what is on a marriage certificate - I've no idea in Scotland.

Just thinking, if they didn't check (and they didn't in England) then he could have put anything on his marriage, she could have been called Bloggs, Smith, Jones etc...... by the time of the marriage or her death.

Do the witnesses give any clues, maybe related to him?

That's very true Flip, probably easier to say your parents are married than to explain why they are not.

The witnesses on the marriage certificate was the brides sister ( my Mum ) and a friend .
