Yesterday I noticed a posting on the ancestry FB site .................. basically the guy was saying that he had not posted on there for some time, but was dismayed to see how it had changed. There were not as many people posting, not as good or interesting postings etc.

I think the problem with the GR page, as well as with the fmp and ancestry pages, is nothing to do with those individual sites ..... it is what has been imposed on them by FB and its Timeline.

I find all the sites messy and distracting. They are no longer pleasant to visit. It is hard to find where the members/likers are posting, and then to work out how to open the posts. Meanwhile you are surrounded by ads and extraneous information.

I know what GR's FB says.

GR have said the staff who deal with the FB page are not the same staff who deal with the GR site.

I go to FB to find out what's going on with GR - because it seems they can't be bothered telling the members on the GR site.

No respect for us at all.

AGJB

AGJB Report 28 Jun 2012 05:27

Am I the only person who's having problems with this updated program? I've had nothing but trouble with it since it was foisted on us.
I won't go into details here and now except to say that I've got to the stage where I have obtained a new family tree program and I run it concurrently with GR and if at some time in the future GR deny access to the old program (which I find to be excellent I might add and which I continue to use), I will cease using GR and use my other tree instead. The hassles with the new program are unbelievable! The other benefit with my new tree is that if for some reason I cannot use or lose this GR program I will still have this other program to fall back on and because it's mine I will not lose it.
Just lately, since GR changed the Search section of the program, I have noticed that I am unable to get into the microfish detail area using Free Births/Deaths/Marriages searches. I am able to do so if I use the non free searches, but then to get to the details of the individual I am looking for I have to pay for it by using credits!! This is either a is another cock up by GR programmers, a genuine oversight or, a price hike by somewhat covert means? If the latter – not nice and under handed!!
Any comments from anyone would be interesting I'm sure.

My subs are due in early August.

I'm waiting to see what GR is doing with the site, and the tree.

The "new" tree was released over six months ago, and it's still not working properly. I absolutely hate it!! Like you Allan, if the old tree goes, so do I.

I have another tree on software, much bigger than my GR one (lots of living relatives, that I wouldn't put on the GR tree).

I can't comment on the Records, because I don't use them. They're mainly English, no use to me.

I can stay as a free member and still be contacted. Not sure if I can still post on the boards??

Hi Scozz

Free members can ...................

build a tree

read but NOT post on the boards

search records but NOT see any details.

reply to pms sent by a paying member, but NOT initiate pms

Standard Members (£19.95/year) can ................

build a tree

read and post on all Boards

contact all other members by pm

search trees

get 50 free credits to search records

search records but NOT see details

Most of us who help on the boards are Standard members.

hope this helps.

I did renew last week ................ I decided that the majority of the problems that were plaguing me had mostly eased. However, I do not use the tree function ............... my tree has remained static at about 130 names for the last 5 years ......... and I do not use the records, as I have all the information that could be found on here. I decided that the fun I get from helping, and the friendships I've made were worth the amount that I pay for a one year subscription

I think, on the whole, the suggestions board has been a waste of our time. :(

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 18 Jul 2012 00:44

Totally agree Joy

No decent replies from the GR Team in ages.

Just shows how little they think of the members.

The trip to London for some members will be a waste of time. They will hand pick those they want to see. Given the membership numbers are up to 12million - probably less than 2.5 million pay a sub - the percentage feedback will be so small that how can GR justify any changes made after that meeting.

They will be losing members because the site is rubbish at the moment, just mentioning problems with the tree as one thing, but loads of other reasons for members to go elsewhere. Then where will this site be - down the pan :-(

LadyScozz Report 18 Jul 2012 04:32

I read Sylvia's posting (above, dated 29 June) but I missed the line about basic members getting 50 credits.

I've NEVER been told about having 50 credits!!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 18 Jul 2012 04:35

Scozz

That is whta their sub information says

I did NOT get 50 free credits when I renewed as a Standard member a couple of weeks ......

so perhaps best NOT to expect them as a renewing member!

I've never been given 50 free credits

Did you get them when you first joined? Or is this a new thing?

wisechild

wisechild Report 18 Jul 2012 12:59

I´ve never had them either.
All I´ve ever had was 30 credits as compensation for all the problems on the site.
Still haven´t used them. Not enough to make it worth while.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 18 Jul 2012 22:31

it wasn't on offer when I joined.

Only saw it as such when I went to copy yhe details to post on here.

I did hear some mention of it last year from someone

I think it is "new" in the last year, or possibly 2 years.

I have never had them when renewing.

LadyScozz

LadyScozz Report 19 Jul 2012 04:11

compensation?

hahaha - we're all due for some freebies??

Didn't hear a word about "compensation" when half my tree disappeared (I've mentioned it before, one of my grandparents was replaced by the other one - my grandfather was also my grandmother, married to himself, and the same lot of ancestors on both sides). It took GR quite a while to sort that out.

Didn't hear about any compensation when I was taken to the UK site when I signed in to the AU one. For some reason my tree wouldn't work properly.

I could go on........ and on........ but we've all got a list of problems we've had.

It's not a case of the squeaky wheel getting the oil :-P I've been VERY squeaky!! I've lost count of the number of emails from GR that start "thankyou for your patience......"

:-P :-P :-P

wisechild

wisechild Report 19 Jul 2012 07:16

Think quite a few of us were given 30 credits. but it was so long ago that I can´t remember what it was for.
In spite of all the time that has passed since then, nothing seems to have improved to any extent & some things have got worse after they have been "improved".
My biggest gripe at the moment is being repeatedly timed out because the site is so slow, or getting the message that my browser can´t find the server.
GR really doesn´t like Firefox.
My patience with the site is just about expired.

Kense

Kense Report 19 Jul 2012 07:41

I think we got 30 credits last year because the site was virtually unusable for a couple of days. Some people opted for a few days extension to their subscription.

I think to get the 50 credits when you renewed, you had to purchase more credits.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 19 Jul 2012 21:17

Wisechild ..................

I use Mozilla Firefox, and have been having few problems for several weeks ...... that's why I renewed!

I d not however use the tree function OR records.

I only use the Boards.

I'm not even having many problems with submitting posts OR in opening My Threads. I haven't been timed out or thrown off, or any of the other problems!

Yes, we got 30 credits OR a couple of days extension on our membership last year when the site was unusable.

I also got about 50 credits earlier this year when they had the WDYTYA show, for helping with questions posed by people visiting the Show.

wisechild Report 20 Jul 2012 07:28

Sylvia.
I don´t use either the tree or records either, but I constantly get told that "Firefox can´t find the server at GR" even when I´ve been using the site for some time & also get "Timed out, the site is taking too long to respond" when I try to change boards &/or pages.
With everything else that´s going on, I shall be reluctant to renew in January except for the fact that helpers on here are so good.
Have had the PC overhauled at a cost of €75 only to be told that it´s working perfectly.

I never log out of GR, or any other site (eg, ancestry, fmp)

I have GR in Bookmarks

for some reason my Firefox opens on to a Google page (does it always???), with Bookmarks as the equivalent of My Favourites.

I usually get into GR with no problems from there ......... about once in 20 times I will have been signed out.

The last one was 2 days ago ............ after I'd had my computer into the "overhaul hospital" for a clean and tune up. I know that always results in me having to sign in on all the sites where I usually stay logged in!
