Hi , wondering if anyone has any info on Joseph Slaven married to Margaret/Mary McCue in Enniskillen , Co.Fermanagh 11th November 1889. Resided in the Cambuslang/Rutherglen areas of Lanarkshire. Looking for any info but more importantly parents names. Thanks for any assistance.

jax Report 22 Oct 2013 01:34

The marriage cert should have the fathers names on at least

mgnv Report 22 Oct 2013 02:34

If he died in Lanarkshire, his d.cert would show his parents, assuming the informant knew that info. You would have to purchase the d.cert thru SP.

ArgyllGran Report 22 Oct 2013 10:07

Do you mean he lived in Lanarkshire before, or after, his marriage?
Was he Scottish or Irish?

There are several families of Slavens in Lanarkshire in 1881, all of Irish extraction.
For instance:

1881 Scotland Census about Joseph Slaven

ArgyllGran Report 22 Oct 2013 10:23

Possible death - if he died in Lanarkshire???

But this one wouldn't be the same as the one in 1901 - too much age difference.

Maybe the one in 1881 census above.

Potty Report 22 Oct 2013 13:05

Just wondering where you got the marriage date from as nothing is coming up in Ireland Marriage Registrations for 1889

ArgyllGran Report 22 Oct 2013 14:05

I checked just in case, but they didn't marry in Scotland, per ScotlandsPeople.

ArgyllGran Report 22 Oct 2013 14:08

As a long shot, there's this marriage in 1896:

Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958 about Joseph Slavin
Name: Joseph Slavin
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1896
Registration District: Enniskillen
Volume: 2
Page Number: 75
FHL Film Number: 101258
Records on Page:
Mary M'Geough - perhaps a variation of McCue???
Catherine Maguire
Joseph Dunleavy
Mary Collins
William Clifford
Joseph Slavin <<<<<<<<<<

Potty Report 22 Oct 2013 14:49

ArgyllGran, if that is the correct family in the 1901, given the ages of the children, 1896 would be a better date for the marriage - that Joseph would only have been 10 in 1889.

Robert Report 23 Oct 2013 02:50

Hi Guys & thanks.

That seems to be the correct family in 1901 census. Got marriage date from birth of child. Happened to come over Joseph while looking for own Slevin/Slaven, and was curious if there was a connection as both Joseph and my Slaven both seemed to come from same part of Co.Fermanagh and moved over to Scotland at roughly the same time. Also resided in same area with both working in brewery. Occupation given in BC was brewery labourer.
The names of the children in census similar to my Slaven.
Knew Joseph was not a brother but possible cousin, but still none the wiser.
Thanks ALL for your help.

Robert Report 23 Oct 2013 02:55

Sorry my mistake 1896 was the correct date for the marriage. Just checked the BC to make sure.

Potty Report 23 Oct 2013 12:31

Did your Slevin come to Scotland before or after 1901? If after, he would probably be on the 1901 Irish Census. There is only one Slevin listed in Enniskillen, a 46 year old single woman, first name could be Therasa. There are 23 Slavins listed. There is only one who could be Joseph's family and the father of the family I Patrick (same as Joseph's first child).

You can see the census here:

Maura Report 23 Oct 2013 13:44

Joseph Slaven married Mary McGeough 1896 Enniskillen
Joseph's father a Patrick
Mary's father a Thomas
