My dad was born in 1914 youngest of 14 children and only one of them was a girl. This poor girl was name Lily followed by a further 11 flower names. I guess mum had been desperate for more girls eh? How the **** did they get them on the cert?

TC, order the certificate and you'll find out. Just remembered my nan's middle name is Bertha, after her grandmother. She was born in 1933 in Dover - you can just imagin how much she hates the name now and why. (hit WW2, big guns called Big Bertha) I also have a William Williams and knew a child called Lewis Lewis. There should be a law preventing the use of surnames as firstnames.

My great grandfather was called Charles Raffell TIVERS. I don't know where it came from, I haven't found any maiden names that it could be taken from. My Grandmother told me his mother won him in a raffle! LOL Sue xx

How's this for first name. Just. Registrar probably asked any second name and father replied 'No Just Jill'. So her name was registered as Just Jill (Truthfully, found this on official documents) Just remembered another one from Official documents a boy named Niggel John.

Stranger Taylor! The Taylors seem to be a pretty inventive lot. A friend is researching a family of them where 'Shepherdess' is used several times as a first name for the girls! I have my grandmother's maiden name of Gilchrist in the middle - can be useful in family history. Liz
