We have many contacts to this "Factori"in, but we have no clue what it is.???

Tan y Grisiau - Post card with a return address, the Factori.

John Jones Died Factori in Bontnewedd.1903

Mary Jones Died Factori in Bontnewedd 1908

There are 4 Bontnewedd's in North Wales I think its a children's refuge, or poor house, any one help please,I have my fingers crossed.

Adding some news:- 8th April 08

We have found that the Factori, comes up as the Rectory on old-maps.co.uk. I have written to the Rectors, will keep you posted

Hi Saltie I have also googled and nothing .Can only sugest that you find a phone number for a museum in the same area and ask as the name my be a local term for a poor house or simalar. Good Luck but would be intrested to find out.

The factory at Tanygrisiau in the parish of ffestiniog was thought to be a "Fulling mill," that is a place where wool was washed and prepared, or felted for the wool trade, it is thought to have been built around 1840 according to Steffan ab Owain

Thank you Carmen my Great-grandfather was a wool worker, what I fail to understand is that we have people born & died there that makes me think its a poor house.
Because we looked for some people in Swansea and eventually found that they died in a work house, the children were made apprentices and found new family's to live with, but, I can be wrong, but thank you for your time, I will post if I find out,

Dea Report 5 Apr 2008 21:07

Hi,

Just a thought - you mention 'the factori' as an address, but I have found that 'factori' is the welsh word for 'bacteria' - could this be the cause, rather than the 'place' of death ??

Carmen Report 5 Apr 2008 22:56

Just a thought ,I suppose you have looked up the deaths on BMD ? - if you send for the death certificates you may solve the puzzle and if Dea is right then you may find it as the cause of death. Blood poisoning perhaps Look forward to hearing the outcome and Good Luck !

Saltie,
Thanks for your email

My half-Welsh husband has just checked in his Welsh dictionary,

there is a welsh word ffactri ....... which means factory or mill

and he thinks it looks as though Factori is an anglicized version of that.

He says a Welsh speaker would say "ff" as "f", so an English person would spell it factri .............. a Welsh person would say something close to "vactri" if there was only one "f"

He suggested that your ancestors may have been living at the mill.

I wonder what would happen if you googled "ffactri"??????

Tan y Grisiau now appears to be a reservoir on the map, very close to Blaenau Ffestiniog

Hope this helps

Adding some thing 18/4/08, I thought that Factori - turning into Rectory was too easy, so I'm back to square one, not for the first time I can tell you especially with the Joneses.
But Dr Roberts turned up I'm part of his exam, he was born 100yds from this rectory and he has sent his Mam to look it up, I have been looking up in the sky for a "Golden Finger pointing at me" will keep you posted.
