Jinet Report 25 Jan 2010 22:29

Thank you Michelle,

My 2nd Grt Gran was Barbara Straughan b. 1867 Seaham Colliery, New Seaham (no b cert) I have her death cert. which gives her husbands full name Robinson Taylor Langlands they married 2 Oct 1884 at Christ Church in New Seaham. (no cert) I use Durham Records Online where i can. she was bap. 16 Aug 1868 Barbara Straughan, daughter of John Straughan & Jane
Barbara's sister was Mary Jane Straughan b. 2 Jan 1870 in Seaham Colliery, New Seaham. to Mary Jane Straughan nee Clark and John Straughan a coal miner. (from cert)
I have'nt ordered Barbara's parents Marr Cert. yet as I am unsure of my findings. The one in question is 2 July 1859 St. Mary the Virgin, Old Seaham John Straughan, son of John Straughan married Jane Clark, daughter of Robert Clark. ( I can only find census reports with the fathers name as Robert Straughan , wife Jane)

I think this is the correct death of John

So it looks like John died in 1845 and Ann his wife remarried in 1848.They most prob moved to Durham to the mines there between 1843-45. The son Robert was born c1843 in Northumberland so we know they were still there then.

Well hope that has helped. Now i would advise you to get the marriage cert of John and Jane to check whether details match.

I've been trying to help a friend and we can't find one family in 1871, though he's got them in 1881 and earlier. I haven't got full information, but taking ages from 1881 the family is Daniel Wicking, wife Louisa, both age 37, and children Arthur 6, Beatrix M, 4 and John 1. They should be in London, possibly St Pancras district. If you can track them down I'd be most grateful. Thanks.

Jane

I only have access to christening records to 1906.I have however found the following info on her.

There were 2 registered births in this name in Sussex in 1920

England & Wales, Birth Index: 1916-2005
about Margaret Slade
Name: Margaret Slade
Mother's Maiden Surname: Peskett
Date of Registration: Jul Aug Sep 1920
Registration district: Westhampnett
Registration county: Sussex, Isle of Wight
Volume Number: 2b
Page Number: 701 (click to see others on page)

England & Wales, Birth Index: 1916-2005
about Margaret Slade
Name: Margaret Slade
Mother's Maiden Surname: Slade
Date of Registration: Jan Feb Mar 1920
Registration district: Christchurch
Registration county: Sussex, Isle of Wight
Volume Number: 2b
Page Number: 1552 (click to see others on page)

Now what is interesting is the following

Born same quarter as the top Margaret Slade a twin

England & Wales, Birth Index: 1916-2005
about Kathleen Slade
Name: Kathleen Slade
Mother's Maiden Surname: Peskett
Date of Registration: Jul Aug Sep 1920
Registration district: Westhampnett
Registration county: Sussex, Isle of Wight
Volume Number: 2b
Page Number: 700 (click to see others on page)

Looks possible this poor baby died

England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2005
about Kathleen Slade
Name: Kathleen Slade
Death Registration Month/Year: 1920
Age at death (estimated): 0
Registration district: Westhampnett
Inferred County: Sussex
Volume: 2b
Page: 381

Now this is where i am confused. You listed that Margaret was born 1920 at Weshampnett?but i found this:

England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2005
about Margaret Slade
Name: Margaret Slade
Death Registration Month/Year: 1920
Age at death (estimated): 0
Registration district: Westhampnett
Inferred County: Sussex
Volume: 2b
Page: 381

So Margaret and Kathleen were i presume twins who died? Now there is a possibility that Margaret listed as dead above is infact the Margaret listed above born 1920 Q1?But was a different reg area than Westhampnett the birth for that 1.Or that the Margaret Slade born 1920 Q1 is your one instead?
Are you certain your Margaret was born in Westhampnett?

For your information the mother of the Peskett children was:

Name Spouse Surname Date of Registration District County
Kathleen M Peskett Slade Apr-May-Jun 1920 Westhampnett Sussex and father was James Slade

England & Wales, Marriage Index: 1916-2005
about James Slade
Name: James Slade
Spouse Surname: Peskett
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1920
Registration district: Westhampnett
Registration county (inferred): Sussex
Volume Number: 2b
Page Number: 1067
Find Spouse: Find Spouse

There were more children born to this couple. Before i look for anything else could you please confirm whether you are certain that your Margaret was born 1920 Westhampnett?both the above deaths are the same quarters as the birth Q3 1920

If you are after Norman's parents didnt they show this information on the scottish site? Normally parents are listed on the marriage records and if you know when he married you could get that information.
Might be worth you going back to the Scottish site i listed. I presume he was born in Scotland Elaine?
Also the marriage cert of the english marriage would show his father's name.
Good luck!

Hi Michelle.
Wondering if you can help at all I have the following family and have hit a brick wall trying to get further back.
I have Elvira Jenkins born 1872 in Maesteg, Bridgend, Glamorgan. There are 3 on free bmd. Tried family search as well, but I cannot pinpoint the exact one to get her birth cert.
I have parents William Jenkins b1845 at Carmarthen, and Margaret ?? b 1849 at Cardiff.
I have found Elvira on the 1881 census living with parents and sister Margaret Ann b1876 Maesteg, and brother Thomas b1879 Llangunch ?? Carmarthen. They are all at no2 Plough Street, ward of penydanan ??, town of Garth, in Merthyr Tyfil this is in Glamorganshire, Wales.
I cannot find a marriage cert for her parents either without a maiden name for her mother.
I have elvira's marriage to John Morgan this also shows her father as William Jenkins but no mother on it and everthing after this date 1894 regarding her 1901 census and children.
Can you help me find a birth registration so I could purchase one for her or even her brother or sister's one so I could then locate the parents marriage.
Anything would be gratefully receIved.
I will keep checking back as I know this isn't going to be easy I have tried hard myself before asking for help.
Many thanks Brenda.
