Find Ancestors

George Herbert Hirst was a well known cricketer. His birth certificate states that his mother was a Mary E Woolhouse. He has no father on the birth cert. I can only find him in the 1901 census with his wife Emma and two children. There is a book about him which states that his grandparents brought him up in the Brown Cow Inn in Kirkheaton. They were Sarah maria and James. How can I find out who mary E Woolhouse was? He did have an aunt called Mary Elizabeth Hirst and wondered if she could have been his mother. Why would she have been called Woolhouse ? I can't find a marriage cert for Mary Elizabeth Hirst and a Woolhouse. Help!!!!!!!!!!

As you can see, there is no mention of George Herbert Hirst on any of the censuses with James and Sarah Maria, even though it has been stated that his grandparents brought him up.

'George Herbert Hirst was born in Kirkheaton on 7 September 1871
at the Brown Cow public house in St. Mary’s Lane. The pub was run by his
mother’s parents James and Sarah Maria Hirst. James also farmed six
acres attached to the pub.
George Herbert left school at the age of 10 and went to work as a wirer
for a hand-loom weaver. He also helped his grandfather droving the cattle'

so where was he from 1871 to 1891 census and beyond to 1901??

I did think that the census record of Charles Hirst in Manchester could have been him but was told by someone on ancestry that he was their ancestor and not the same family.

I think you're right that your cousin maybe has the wrong birth certificate. Can't believe that biography of him is wrong. He would have been found out as to his parentage.

His supposed actual date of birth was 7th September 1871. Still doesn't help with where he was at census time. It does say in one of his biographies that he left school at the age of 10 and went to work for a hand loom weaver, which would have been about 1881.
