Diane Report 10 May 2009 21:21

He is related to my cousin, who is the same age as my children. I have been helping her do her tree for her dad. We have managed to find out an awful lot but this George Herbert Hirst saga has proved challenging!

I have contacted all the people that Mary mentioned, Fern, Alan and Richard. I will just have to wait and see if they reply.

Hi Diane
Just a bit more information on George Herbert. I have just opened my Hudderfield Examiner this morning to read a story about the founder of the paper Joseph Woodhead. Listed are his interests which included cricket. It then shows a brilliant photo possibly c 1910 of three local cricketers Wilfred Rhodes, George Herbert Hirst, Schofield Haigh(a gr tried to connect this man to my tree which I haven't as yet managed) and the founder Joseph Woodhead. This picture may be in the book but if not it will be possible to order from the Examiner.-JLe

Thanks Janet,
I think my cousin would like that. I think I will do it for her as I don't recall seeing it in the book. She sent me some lovely photos from The States of her and her family and it would be nice to do something for her. I haven't had any replies from the people I emailed. I was so hoping I would have by now.

I have some new info. Kirklees Registry Office have no record of a Mary Elizabeth Hirst born at the time that the one at the Brown Cow Inn (census 1871) would have been born. I think she was Mary Elizabeth Woolhouse and that George was the illegitimate child of a Hirst male. Not necessarily the boys listed in the census. That would explain why he was said to be brought up with his grandparents. Mary E Woolhouse only married in 1879 and it was probably then that he moved out of the Brown Cow. So all I need to know now is WHO WAS HIS FATHER!!!!!!! It is strange that at the time of her marriage there was a marriage between Charles Hirst and Jane Hirst. I wonder if they had anything to do with it? Supposition, which should never be done! I just thought that all who are interested would like to know!

Eureka!!!!!!!!!
I decided to look for a marriage for James Hirst, publican at the Brown Cow. His wife was Sarah Maria................... Woolhouse!!!!!!!!!!
Mary E was obviously the daughter of Sarah Maria! Mary was born in 1847 and Sarah Maria and James Hirstr married in 1850. What a relief to have sorted that one out! I still don't know who his father was. Probably never will.

YIPPEEEE - well done you. Won't your cousin be pleased, after the doubts I had over the birth certificate of GHH!

Diane

Diane Report 12 May 2009 21:56

I also doubted the birth certificate of George Herbert. I was convinced that Kay had got the wrong one! Of course the chances of two George Herbert Hirsts being born on the same day in the same place were pretty remote. Nevertheless I did doubt it. Such a relief to have solved that one! I can now look forward to the imminent birth of my first grandchild, due last Friday! I have been so engrossed in this that I haven't given it my due attention! It won't make any difference anyway. It will turn up when it;s ready. Do you think we will cause our descendents so much trouble a few hundred years down the line?!

Best wishes Diane for the birth of your first grandchild. Glad to have been of some help with your quest.

(it might be an idea to post something on the YI site to say its been sorted - if you haven't already of course - I haven't looked!)

Hi There,

I did spot the Harriet Maria name and thought that she was probably her sister. Will now have whole new connections to search for!
Choccy, I didn't have time last night to inform YI as I had spent so much time sorting out Mary E Woolhouse. I have been at work all day so will do it now.
Thanks to everyone who helped me!
