Derek,

Please could you tell me which Parish Records you cover in East Yorkshire?
I thought I might have a go at my Barlow's and Barraclough's in Yorkshire.
I don't want to bother you unnecessarily.

Regards

Hello Jo.....after all my meanderings in my message below......I find that your original deductions may be right......

I don't think that Henry's Birth in 1844 was ever Civilly Registered........the nearest is 1842 Bakewell but he was a solicitor in later life.

Henry was buried 1896 aged 52...........Sarah was born 1815...was unmarried when she was buried in February 1845 at St Giles Hartington........and if she was Henry's mother it was probably in or shortly after childbirth......

Whether Henry was ever actually baptised is open to question, but of course way back then was not necessary.........I don't have the Hartington Pr's, but net time I'm in Matlock I'll have a look .....if he's there, his mother will be shown.......if not..he was never baptised....and if his mum died soon after Birth, i'm not surprised that his birth was not Registered at Ashbourne.
EDIT.......you can find Vincent House Farm on Google Earth....just north of Hartington near Pilsbury

Derek. ( P.S..don't miss my earlier message)

Thanks Derek

Its nice to have another opinion when there is no proof.

The 4 boys John, Joseph, Robert and Edward didn’t get married till well after 1844 Joseph being the first in 1848 and a long time to wait if you already have a child. Also wouldn’t it have been unlikely that he would have taken the Broomhead name and lived with the Broomheads if he was an ilagitamate son of a son.

Edward and Ann would have been a possibility but their Henry is living with them in 1851.

Ann Broomhead c 1832 is too young leaving only Sarah who as you say may have died shortly after childbirth.

The other fact that leads me to this conclusion is that in the 1851, 1861 &1891 it is very specific that he was born at Vincent House.

There is a record on Family Search for the marriage and in fathers name is "Nullins Filius “

Thanks for your input, I think this one is a real dead end.

Hi Derek,

Long-time since I have been here! Hope you are well.

Questions again about the Marsh family of Scarcliffe.

Jonathan Marsh (c1743-1781) married Sarah Gervois in 1764 in Upper Langwith. According to the previous research you believed Sarah's name was in fact Jarvis. Nobody seems have further information. I have found the following records and wondered if they are more likely than what other trees have in them.

Sarah Jarvis born c1742, christened in Bolsover. Parents are Joseph and Mary Jarvis. Following death of Jonathan in 1781, a Sarah Marsh marries John Guest in Scarcliffe in December 1782. A Sarah Gest dies in Scarcliffe in 1814, born around 1742.

If you re-collect my connection to them is via their son William (born c1762 - 1770) and his wife Amelia or Amy Marsh (nee Brown). However, having reviewed my tree and searching various sites I can't find a record connecting William to Jonathan. Have all the trees made an assumption about William's parents?

Regards
Mark

Hello Sheila..and best wishes to my old mate Ginny........what a nightmare!!I don't mean Ginny,I mean your query!)

It took a while, and great use of the Poirot little grey cells to work out that you have to ignore the WWWWWW's//Wollesley.Wellesley and Woolcott.........which are either affectations or at best middle christian names..used or not used at will.

The name yo're looking for is REED.with or without a W.

THOMAS W REED was a Police Officer born 1846 in Islington Middlesex.....may have been the son of Thomas and Emma.

Very little of this is to do with Derbyshire until 1880.onwards.

Thomas W reed married Elizabeth from Ireland..born about 1859..and their first two children were born in Madras in India 1874 and 1876...Eliza and William Henry.you might look at your india History and the British Raj to get an idea why Thomas was out in India.

He was back in islington ib 1878.for the birth of John Joseph..and by 1879 was in Chapel en le Frith for the birth of Maria 1878..and of THOMAS WOOLCOTT REED...registered as such born OND 1879 ...........
.....but on the 1881 Census they are all living at 128 Bayer Street St Werbergh Derby.

Thomas Woollesly Reed married Alice bertha Hopkinson AMJ 1902..and had three children befroe 1911............by which time they are living in Staveley nr Chesterfield with a Grocery Wholesale and Retail business.

Becasue of the very arbitrary way in which the middle W is either used or not used..it is very difficult to reasearch REED in London, and frankly I'm not going to try......I suggest you ignore the obvious mistranscriptions.....I suggest there is a Female maiden name some way back in the family which was a variation of one of the W options.....

I'm not much good to you even in Derbyshire after 1911......only insofar as I can chase bits and pieces that frankly, anyone van find.

I hope I have been able to help you...........I may well have better luck with Alice Bertha's history if you want it....

Hi Sheila.here is Chapter and verse on Alice B Hopkinson.

The family farmed one of the only two farms at Wheatcroft.a tiny hamlet near Crich..I just happen to have the Crich..and Ashover Parish Records....

John Hopkinson and Frances Allen married 06.05.1798 in Ashover....
Their son:-
John Hopkinson was born Ashover 13.06.1799...

He married Mary Nightingale 17.04.1828...........she was baptised at Crich 14.04.1861 daughter of Joseph.and whenever I find that name I get asked the same question and the answer is a big fat NO.........

John and Mary had the following children at Crich...

Joseph Nightingale Hopkinson 19.07.1835
Frances Eliza Hopkinson 17.01.1837....married William Bird 08.05.1858
Selena Maria Hopkinson 29.10.1839....married John Lee Smith 24.10.1867
JOHN NIGHTINGALE HOPKINSON 02.05.1841..married SARAH ELLEN HORNER ist Qtr 1861 Belper District.

Crich is in the Belper Registration District........

They had the following children:_

Walter 1868
Edith E 1873
Sarah A 1875
Mary Lizzie 1879
ALICE BERTHA HOPKINSON 1881..who married THOMAS W REED 1902.

I hope that answers most if not all your questions.

Derek.

Hello Sheila..............you don't do "easy" do you??

The only way you can differentiate between the two is to get her Marriage certificate on which will be the clues you need.......

Things you're looking for:-

Edith H Hampson..(nee Reed).........married:-

William Benjamin Horn or William B Horn........you are looking for Father's name..which won't help you becasue they are both James....you are also looking for Father's Occupation:-

William from Sussex..father (in 1911) Nurseyman from Yapton........

William from Hull.... Father Ships Steward/Seaman..........I can't find William from Hull except on the 1891....which might mean he died..so problem solved.

I have, obviously no idea of an occupation for William from Hull............but William from Sussex (littlehampton..which I know well, and is effectively East Preston......was Carter..in 1911.

So from this combination you will definitely get the right man........his occupation and/or fathers occupation............but you need to purchase the Marriage certificate for Edith Hampson.

Hello Sheila.....you'll be glad to know that I now have a pretty complete record for WILLIAM B HORN..including parents and Grandparents.......

Thing is..how much do you already know ?/ because I spend many hurs, thinking i am being utterly brilliant in digging into the darkest corners..and then finding that my correspondent already knows it all........have just finishe such a case on my East Yorkshire Thread.............made me utterly furious that the guy had been haunting the Boards for three years,,just wasting everybody's time.

Which of course does not apply to you............

Here, in summary is what i have found out.:-

WILLIAM BERNARD HORN married EDITH HELENA HAMPSON 06.06.1935 in Bristol......they were Catholics..which always makes things more difficult.

Ediths father was Thomas Wellesley Reed (deceased) Grocery manager.

William's father was SYLVESTER HORN..a Marine Engineer from Lancashire.

Which solved nothing until I realised that the reason none of them were on the 1901 or 1911 Census is because they were all in Ireland!!..Sylvester was torpedoed in 1917 in WW1..William Bernard (1907) and all his siblings were born in Cork

If this is all new to you, then I have loads of goodies for you.

Derek
