Christine Report 1 Dec 2009 23:47

Tying to find Harold and Ethel Atkinson, lived in the Leeds area around 1920's.(don't know any birth dates all we have is their names).
We think harold may have been a dentist.
Don't know if came from leeds or may have been born somewhere else, my grandmother told me that Ethel had a picture of Jewish family on the mantlepiece.
We think they had a daughter called Audrey.
known to have a son called Dennis(born 1920's, we're not sure when exactly) who was in the Scots Guard during world war 2.
We think Dennis may have been a signwriter too.
He married Mary Marsden(her maiden name) She was born in south west london in 1924.
(my apologies i wrote segger before.)in 1945 in london.
Had one son Philip(my father)born june 2 1945 in Queen Charlotte's hospital Hammersmith.
They spilt up when He was still a baby.

We have no other information, no idea if any of them are still alive, where they were born/died.
I'd like to know anything about the family, as we know almost nothing.
If there is anyone who recognises this please get in touch.

Any information would be great, i realise it's not a lot to go on.
Thankyou.

If they were married by the 1920s, they are unlikely living now - ?

So you are trying to find ... their deaths? children/grandchildren? ancestors? Can you give approx dates of birth for them and/or their son?

If you can explain your connection, and specifically what you would like to know, it may help to find info.

Okay, Christine, I got your PM in answer to mine of Dec 2009 in answer to yours that I didn't know what it was about.

I found the thread by looking on the Atkinson surname board, fortunately.

(After you've read/posted in this thread, click on "My thread participation" first and then click on "Trying to Find". That's how to get out of the Atkinson "surname board" loop and see the entire Trying-to-find board where I and others read your post.)

Your message was:

Dear Janey,
Apologies for the delay, i'm trying to trace Dennis Atkinson, son of Harold and Ethel, lived in Leeds, England.
Kindest regards,
Christine

Let's have a look ...

starr1 found a marriage, but is Ulverston the likely location? You don't know Ethel's surname?

I've tested the surname pairs for likely marriages against births, and I wonder whether this would be your Dennis:

Name: Dennis M Atkinson
Mother's Maiden Surname: Beal
Date of Registration: Apr May Jun 1924
Registration district: Wortley
Registration county: Yorkshire
Volume Number: 9c
Page Number: 652

Marriages Mar 1919
Atkinson Harold Beal Driffield 9d 593
Beal Ethel G Atkinson Driffield 9d 593

-- no, sorry, that Dennis died the year he was born.

Can you check your first post - Mary Segger? There's no Atkinson-Segger marriage.

I'm trying to see whether he had a middle name, but I can't find his marriage to check.

Heh, and that one's the wrong way around. ;) We'll just have to wait to hear what more info Christine may have.

We need a marriage around early 1940s-ish ... there is only one Mary Segger marriage after 1915, and that was in 1956 ... okay, we may be getting somewhere. The spouse was Dennis West. Too much coincidence?

There are several births following on that marriage, and I'd think the ones up to 1965 would fit ... but there's one in 1975 for which there's no other marriage.

Well, I wonder whether this was Mary:

Name: Mary E Murphy
Spouse Surname: George E Segger
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1936
Registration district: Brentford
Registration county (inferred): Middlesex
Volume Number: 3a
Page Number: 745

i.e. a Segger by marriage.

Name: George E Segger ?
Death Registration Month/Year: 1953
Age at death (estimated): 42
Registration district: Middlesex South
Inferred County: Middlesex
Volume: 5f
Page: 44

I didn't want to ask Christine's father's personal details as he/she may not want them posted here.

There is a Q1 1946 birth that fits some of the info I have here, i.e. if Mary was a Segger by marriage.

... but no, Mary *A* Segger married West ... and she was born 1932.

Hello,
This is all the info that we have:
Harold Atkinson married to Ethel(do not know her maiden name).
We think Harold was a dentist and they came from/lived in Leeds around the 1920's.
They had a son Dennis(my paternal grandfather)and a daughter Audrey.
Dennis was in the scots guard during world war 2.
We think Dennis was also a signwriter.
Dennis married Mary Segger/seggar(my grandmother) in 1944.
we don't know anything about Harold, Ethel or Dennis after the war, Mary and Dennis spilt up when my father was still a baby.
do not know if Dennis is still alive or if there are any other family members still around.

I don't see a marriage in 1944 for a Dennis Atkinson never mind to a Segger / Seggar!

rootgatherer Report 23 Nov 2010 21:24

Could Dennis have been his middle name?

No probably not him, he seems to be an only child.

Name: Edgar D Atkinson
Mother's Maiden Surname: Arran
Date of Registration: Jul Aug Sep 1921
Registration district: Leeds
Registration county: Yorkshire
Volume Number: 9b
Page Number: 766

Then again, I am not seeing a marriage for his parents, so perhaps his mother had been married previously and Audrey a half sister?

No, that's not looking very hopeful either.

Rose, I,m now being to like the look of Edgar and Audrey!

Slightly different spelling of the MMN. Will have another wee look.

I wonder if Ethel and Harold ever married? I would be sorely tempted to buy that birth certificate for Edgar!

This possible birth for Ethel keeps coming back to me but nothing to base it on really.
