Calling cards are sooo Victorian so don't know why JC uses them; anyway, the dear lady isn't quite old enough to retire so we may as well make use of her!

Things do get rather tame when you're not around JC .................I will refrain from labelling you Sweet Pea but may resort to Calla Lily if pushed...;

Nicky -- oddly enough, Susann isn't that odd a spelling -- even up to the latest generation (from searching the births index). I suspect it is pronounced "Suzanne" and is an Englishfied spelling of it. ;)

There's no Susann Rolfe on the electoral roll in the last 8 years (I think 192.com has listings starting in 2002).

So I think that settles that, unfortunately.

Nicky - what you do need is her exact date of birth, which means getting her birth certificate.

That's the way to search the deaths index w/o knowing a surname -- by given name (or just Sus*, e.g.) and date of birth.

Good chance she is still living at 73ish, and the deaths index does go only to 2005, but at least you might be sure of no death in England/Wales to that date from that search, anyhow.

Nicky - Susann's mum wasn't married? Was her mum an aunt of your father, something like that?

What about two possibilities -- Susann was adopted, or her mum married and Susann took her stepfather's name? Do you know anything else about her? Her mum's name maybe?

Dad was put in an orphanage and was told at the age of 21 he had a half si, no more, no less!!!!
I am tryiong to locate her as dad is 75 and if she is still alive would love to meet her xxx thanx

Had a giggle this morning whilst drying my hair.....thinking of this thread as I had just glanced at it and the comment on Sweet Pea/Calla Lily........and it reminded me of Lilo Lil - remember her from the tv series 'Bread' many moons ago?? I don't think our JC would be too flattered!

Hmmmm, yes. The certificate is where you need to start -- because it will give the mother's name and that will settle the question!

I'm thinking she isn't likely your family, unfortunately.

There are events in Lothingland reg dist after her birth: for example, 10 marriages between 1943 and 1974. It looks like a separate Rolfe clan, if your Kathleen was born and married in Chelmsford.

The first Rolfe who married in Lothingland was born on the Isle of Wight. And the problem with searching before Susann's 1937 birth is that the reg dist of Lothingland was only created in 1935, out of three other districts: Mutford, Plomesgate and Hartismere. So searching gets a bit complicated. ... But, for example, there were a few dozen Rolfe events in Mutford going back to 1845 and up to 1934. A Rolfe child with mother Rolfe was born in 1934 and died at birth, for instance.

Do get that certificate, and let us know, but I'd be prepared for disappointment.


Now ... if your dad *did* have a half-sister, I wonder whether she was registered in the father's name ...

Re my theory about your dad having a half-sister who was registered in her father's name ... I've checked out all the girls born in Chelmsford 1930-1936 with mother Rolfe - there were only a few - and in each case there were other children born with the same parents' surnames, so that theory looks dead.

I don't know the geography, so maybe it's entirely possible Kathleen would have been working in Lothingland district, or gone there to have her baby (maybe to family?). Waiting for the certificate with bated breath!

And one must point out that if Nicola had said / if we'd had the smarts to ask in the first place *why* we were looking for Susann and all that, we'd all have just said *get the certificate!!* to start with. ;)

True Janey, but just think of all the interesting dialogue Nicky would have missed out on!
