Hi
I wonder if you could help me please,I am looking for
British Army Records WW1 for John Bowler born 1888 Nottingham
Yorks Light Infrantry Lance Corparol.

I have found this information on His Marriage Certificate to Adeliza Whittaker 1916 @ Nottingham

I know Adeliza Married again 1924@ Nottingham to George Worthington.So was John Bowler killed in WW1 or died in Nottingham.I havnt acsees to Ancestry ,so I wondered if some would help me PLEASE.

Soldiers Died in the Great War gives the information that the man Shirley has found on CWGC is Jack Bowler, born Thorneywood Nottingham.

The only thing is there is a son for John and Adeliza =Claude Bowler 1923 born Nottingham.

What does Ancestry say on theor records please for a John Bowler WW1

if Adeliza had a child after John died, but before she re-married, then it would be registered as Bowler, and he would be assumed to be the father.


there are cases where children have been born 10 or more years after the husband died, but still are "assumed" to be his!!

British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920

He won the Victory, the British and the 1915 Star

He was first a Private, then was promoted to Sergeant.

His name on the card is J Bowler, and "ack" has been added in a different hand and different coloured ink



The description of the medals:-

Medals awarded during WWI included:

# 1914-15 Star was awarded for service in France or Flanders (Belgium) between 23 November 1914 and 31 December 1915, or for service in any theater between 5 August 1914 and 31 December 1915


# Allied Victory Medal (Victory Medal) was awarded for service in any operational theater between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. It was issued to individuals who received the 1914 and 1914-15 Stars and to most individuals who were issued the British War Medal. The medal was also awarded for service in Russia (1919-1920) and post-war mine clearance in the North Sea (1918-1919).


# British War Medal was awarded to both servicemen and civilians that either served in a theater of war, or rendered service overseas between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. It was also awarded for service in Russia, and post-war mine clearance in the Baltic, the Black Sea, and the Caspian Sea between 1919 and 1920.

I have been told that he was killed in action1918

No Jack Bowler was born in 1888,

Jack Robert Bowler 1883 in Eton.

It is the army records which are bugging me==death 1918 ???
John Bowler married Adeliza Whittaker 1916 @ Nottingham have the certificate,they had 2 sons John Bowler born 1918 and Claude Bowler 1923 both Nottingham
